JCMS JAG students competed in the 2024 JAG KY Regional CDC this week. We are happy to announce that all of our competitors not only had an awesome time but also qualified for state as well.

JCMS JAG visited the Paintsville Expo presented by South East Area Health Education Center. Our students spoke to several area colleges about their educational offerings towards multiple health career fields. We also got the opportunity to speak with multiple health career professionals about the work they do. We cannot thank them enough for inviting us! JCMS JAG had a super fun day! We got to experience first hand why effective communication is essential to success when working with a team. Students were asked to build cup pyramids with out communicating what so ever. Then they were asked to build them using verbal and non-verbal communication. Needless to say, the non-communication version took quite a bit more time, was more frustrating, and sometimes not even successful for some teams. On the other hand, when the students were aloud to communicate, the success rate increased and the amount of time to complete decreased showing the importance of effective communication. JCMS JAG kick started the week off on Monday with a Soft Skills Bootcamp. Students are creating a Google Slides presentation to show off their knowledge. Stayed tuned in, we will be completing some fun activities in the coming days.

Each activity will challenge the students abilities, which should foster some creativity, crtitical thinking, effective communication (listening and speaking), respect, problem solving, teamwork, patience, negotiation, time management, and interpersonal skills.

First day of the school year at Johnson County Middle School! Even though we were super excited to get back and see our friends, we started right away at building our employable skills with the introduction of “GNAP.”

GNAP is an acronym we use in the JAG ( Jobs for American Graduates) program that stands for Greeting, Name, Affiliation, and Purpose. This is an easy to remember acronym that teaches students how to introduce theirselves to anyone. We coupled this technique with eye contact and a respectable handshake.

The ability to develop these “soft skills” at an early age will go a long way in growing our students ability to communicate effectively and make lasting impressions in the workplaces.
