Youth Health Rangers - Maui

Youth Health Rangers - Maui A club inspiring and growing healthy and discerning leaders for our community and home through school and community gardens - F.O.O.D.

Practical Science of food and our bodies and the parallels to the land and sea. We investigate, interview, research and document through all forms of media. We share our findings and processes on the new MAUITUBE channel. We have brought together the best elements of other organizations, such as: Outward Bound, rotary club, boy/girl scouts, Future Farmers of America, 4H, the Presidents(health & fi

tness)challenge.org, Sherlock Holmes (tee hee) and the chamber of commerce (inspiring young entrepreneurs). Youth Rangers engage in our Health Challenges to reduce diabetes and weight through our Hot Yoga Studio at Pauwela Cannery and eating Microgreens daily from the FREE starter home kit they receive upon joining these challenges. The amazing results will be documented weekly, online, by them, of them, for all. Microgreens is our NEW Fast Food Revolution; the fastest growing, maximum nutrition on the planet. Our Youth Rangers are under a non-profit which receives donations to provide the yoga classes and microgreens. Each tri-mester we will also focus on an environmental concern, by either volunteering our time, or interviewing about waste or trees or more, uploading all online for all to learn from. Youth Health Rangers uncover what doesn't work, nutritionally, environmentally or for a healthy lifestyle, according to them, (scientifically) and reports on it. Youth Health Rangers learn new health strategies to reduce dis-ease and to increase their health, by doing it, and report on it.

=================
Our mission as a non-profit for prevention of childhood obesity and diabetes, now a national epidemic, is to inspire and teach CRITICAL THINKING and LOGICAL REASONING to our youth and children, around what we put in our mouths every day; where it comes from, what’s in it, and how good is it for our bodies. We give them video cameras, train them to interview, asking fundamental questions about FOOD; the Science of Food and nutrition. They learn on their own, what matters and why and hopefully this engenders them to make better and healthier choices because they figured it out on their own, not just being told "it is good for you" without any healthy role models, creating little Sherlock Holmes' of the sustainable food world. An aspect of our 'Club' is also aligning with a local environmental project to learn about and to give assistance to; like Ocean Defenders or Surfriders Foundation or Hui Malama.

Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posing” -- standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident -- can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an i...

Have you heard about 11-year old Zachary Maxwell who made a documentary about the school lunch program?

This young man was troubled by the fact that the advertisements for lunch at his school didn't match reality. So he took a video camera into his school without permission. Find out what happened!

Here's a link to the movie Yuck, which has been winning awards:

Can you imagine presenting a TED talk at 11 years old? Birke Baehr did just that, and he totally rocked it. There are enormously wealthy companies such as Monsanto, Dow, and Kraft Foods who do not want us to even get a hint of what he's talking about here. That's the beauty of Social Media…

this is WHY we exist - ask a lot of questions and take responsibility. yes, sometimes it feels like doodoo, having to do do something to protect our environment - like picking up trash at beach or not tossing garbage onto roadways (anywhere for that matter)

Via "Food has it's price. Quick Fact: More than 40 million children under the age of five are overweight. Once considered a high-income country problem, overweight and obesity are now on the rise in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban settings. More than 30 million overweight children are living in developing countries and 10 million in developed countries.

The garbage ingredients are the cheapest. That's why you can go to a drive thru and get a burger, fries, and soda for $3 these days. People get excited and think "WHAT A GREAT DEAL!!!!!". Sure is. You get fed today, but how many tomorrows will you be around for? I'd rather spend a couple extra dollars on feeding my family now with the right foods, then have to worry about thousands, and thousands in medical bills down the road.

If you bring the junk into the home, of course it will get eaten. Leave it at the store. Stock your home with healthy meals and snacks and that will be the only options for everyone, especially the kids, to eat. Kids don't do the shopping. And eating healthy does NOT mean cutting out taste or fun meals. Your kids will thank you later on, when they are living a normal, healthy, and active life. We GAVE them life. The job shouldn't stop there. We need to continue giving them (quality) "life" while we raise them.

They're OUR responsibility, so let's do the best we can for them, and it all starts with leading by example. Don't make a proper meal for your kids and then eat a Whopper in front of them.

The activity level also plays a VERY important role. Cut WAY down on the time the family stares at screens...whether that's TV or other electronics. Get everyone up and moving. Get the kids into sports. Have meals together...not someone on the couch, someone in their room, etc.. . It's an important time for bonding and communication. After the meal, have everyone go on a walk together. Spend as much time outdoors as possible. Make it mandatory. Our bodies are meant to stay active. We're born with an incredible machine that will treat us great for many years, if we give it the right fuel.

If these words have provided any motivation at all today, then please consider liking and sharing this post to help spread the word. Ignoring the issue never helps. If you're already running a healthy and active home, then maybe some of your friends can benefit from this.

Our kids are the future, so let's make sure they make it there!
