Written by a fellow childcare provider:
To Families with Children in Family Child Care: How crazy is our world right now!
Please know that your provider is afraid and anxious because they are trying to make the best decisions for the health and safety of their family AND YOURS and some even the health of their homes!
Some providers may stay open, others may close and only they know the specific reasons for their decisions: Health Concerns, Fear of getting sick or sharing the illness with the children and families they hold so dear, Fear of losing their home and their business (Family child care is the only business I know of that is in this position and so far has no financial safety net!). Your providers may also soon be 'teachers' for their own school-age children and the ones in their care and be worried that they will be doing your child a disservice in some way!
They are getting mixed messages: stay open for essential employees, everyone else stay home...but what about parents working from home? Each provider has different policies and a different contract and struggles between closing and charging families or charging a discounted rate or using vacation.
Also, family child care providers are by nature nurturers and caregivers. These are people who want everyone to be cared for and happy (including the parents/guardians of the kiddos they care for) KNOW that they are ANGUISHED about trying to decide what is best FOR EVERYONE and going around and around only to realize that there is no perfect answer.
Please take a moment to let your family child care provider know that they are appreciated and supported and that YOU KNOW that whatever they decide to do during this Pandemic, that you understand it is being done out of love for your child!
Stay Safe and Stay Healthy Friends! And wash your hands!
