The firefighters demonstrated the power and strength that takes to control one of the fire hoses, letting the kids turn the water on. Turn it off and spray the flames down in a practice house! Each child got to take a turn, and they all had a blast!

So we had our fall field trip this week and got a tour of the Paige fire department!

We learned so much! We learned why it’s important for children to know how to call 911 we learned why it’s important to crawl on your belly. If you see smoke in your house and try not to breathe in the smoke, we learned about all of the schooling and training that firefighters and EMTs have to go through to get certified. We also learned about all the things that they carry on a fire truck that are for things other than fires!

We are so blessed in our students to not really have any happy little classroom challenges!

if we did, we’d think of them this way.

Because this way of approaching difficult children as challenges to be figured out rather than labeling them as difficult children puts the balance of the challenging behavior on the teacher, rather than leveling that on the child.

Teachers are grownups with tools in our belts and years of experience enabling us to handle frustration and challenges way better than any eight year old ever could .

There are no bad kids, there are tough circumstances, there are rough home lives, and there are accommodations to be made, but there are no bad kids.

So our first graders are really getting in the swing of taking their spelling tests and doing really really good! Just about all of them are getting 100% every single time!

Yesterday, Drew insisted that her mustache was the secret to her success;) she did get 100%!!!

Cooperation and teamwork are cornerstones of our philosophy here at PCS. Our mixed grade classrooms foster wonderful relationships between the students, give the younger students role models to look up to and the older students learn the importance of leadership by example.

Anyone who visits our classrooms will feel the camaraderie between the kids and witness the incredible friendships this kind of learning environment grows.

In this photo, the younger students “instructed” the older kids on building a structure. This required communication skills, language and vocabulary skills, spatial awareness, negotiation of turns, strategic planning, critical thinking skills and the presence of some really great social skills. Learning isn’t just happening when we are teaching. Learning is a attitude at PCS and happens every minute of every day 🙂
