The Paducah Tilghman volleyball team may have gotten off to a slow start in terms of game action, but the Lady Tornado have been perfect through their first two matches. Tilghman picked up its second win Thursday night with a 3-1 victory over St. Mary, completely flipping the script from how the 2025 season began.

“We had an early injury to start the season, so we’ve had to change the lineup on top of some other critiquing we’ve had to do,” Paducah Tilghman head coach Gwen Duncan said. “The ball has just fallen where it’s supposed to fall. We are seeing a lot of improvements from last year.”

One of those improvements has been the return of senior Ma’Kel Ridgeway after taking a break in 2025. In their 3-1 win over the Lady Vikings, Ridgeway tallied 14 service aces on the night, paired with 10 kills to help lead her team to victory.

“Ma’Kel is fundamentally sound,” Duncan said. “She’s been playing volleyball for a long time, including club ball. She returns to the team for her senior year and she’s been an immediate leader. Whether she’s on the back row or the front row, she can play all the way around. She just doesn’t get frazzled.”

The majority of Ridgeway’s aces came within the final 10 points of the opening 25-13 set, where she had a significant hand in those points at service. She rode that momentum into the second set, helping the Lady Tornado to a 7-0 lead as she continued her strong and strategic serves.

That second set was all Tilghman as they ran away with a 25-11 win and a 3-0 sweep in sight.

The Lady Vikings weren’t about to let that happen on their home court, however. They snagged the first point of the set and would never let the lead swing by more than a point until the 17-15 mark.

Sophomore Lucy Wincenski would deliver a pair of aces to go up 18-15 and the Lady Vikings would steadily maintain that lead until the 25-22 win to cut the night to 2-1.

With the ball back in Ridgeways hands, the Lady Tornado would take a 3-0 lead to start the fourth set and before long they held a 10-3 lead with kills from Hailyn Hughes paired well with the aces from her senior teammate.

“I told our girls to just stick to the fundamentals,” Duncan said about her message to the team going into the fourth set. “Bump, set, kill. Just lock in. We had a lot of errors in that third set, so we really tried to correct those things.”

Hughes had 15 kills on the night to lead her team as the dominant presence above the net.

Through the middle of the final set, Lily Coomer would get in on the service ace action, tallying two and helping Tilghman to a 16-3 lead. While St. Mary found some motivation for a final push, it was ultimately Hughes who tapped the ball over the net for the 25-15 set point and 3-1 win.

Tilghman will be back in action Saturday as they take on Trigg County in the Livingston Central Classic. For St. Mary, they will look to snap a six-game skid and get their first win of the season by taking on Livingston Central on Saturday in the Livingston Central Classic.
