Leadership Monday

Did you know one of America's most influential agricultural leaders was also a member of Alpha Zeta?

This week we recognize Henry A. Wallace, a member of Alpha Zeta's Wilson Chapter at Iowa State University, where he studied agriculture and developed his lifelong passion for agricultural science and innovation.

Wallace became a pioneer in hybrid corn development and founded the company that later became Pioneer Hi-Bred. His work helped advance corn production and introduced innovations that would have a lasting impact on American agriculture.

His leadership eventually took him from the cornfields of Iowa to Washington, D.C., where he served as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and later as Vice President of the United States under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Through science, innovation, and public service, Wallace remained deeply connected to agriculture and the people who make it possible.

Leadership Lesson: Great leaders challenge conventional thinking and use new ideas to create opportunities for others.

We are proud to celebrate the legacy of a fellow Alpha Zeta member whose leadership helped shape American agriculture.

Leadership Monday

This week, we recognize Mollie Orshansky (1915โ€“2006), an economist and researcher whose work transformed the way America understands hunger and poverty.

While serving with the Social Security Administration, Orshansky developed the official U.S. poverty measure, using the cost of a nutritionally adequate diet to help policymakers better understand family needs. Her research shaped nutrition policy and food assistance programs that continue to support millions of Americans today.

Her passion for the work came from personal experience. Growing up in a family of modest means, she understood the difficult choices many families face. Reflecting on those experiences, she once said:

"If I write about the poor, I don't need a good imaginationโ€”I have a good memory."

Her work reminds us that agriculture is about more than producing food. It is about helping ensure families have access to safe, nutritious meals while strengthening communities across our nation.

Leadership Lesson: Great leaders combine knowledge with compassion to create lasting change.

At Alpha Zeta, we celebrate leaders whose work has strengthened agriculture, improved lives, and inspired future generations to serve with purpose.

๐Ÿ Happy National Honey Bee Day! ๐Ÿฏ

Did you know? Honey bees do much more than make honeyโ€”they help feed the world.

๐ŸŒผ Honey bee pollination contributes an estimated $15 billion in added crop value to U.S. agriculture each year. From fruits and vegetables to nuts and many of the foods we enjoy every day, these tiny pollinators play an essential role in our food supply.

Today, let's celebrate the hardworking honey bees, dedicated beekeepers, and everyone working to protect these remarkable pollinators.

Leadership Monday

This week, we celebrate Justin Smith Morrill (1810โ€“1898), whose vision forever changed agricultural education in America.

As the author of the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862, he helped establish colleges and universities dedicated to agriculture, engineering, and the mechanical arts. His belief that higher education should be practical and accessible created opportunities for generations of students and laid the foundation for the land grant institutions that continue to shape agriculture today.

His legacy also lives on within Alpha Zeta through the Morrill Chapter at Penn State, which proudly carries his name.

Leadership Lesson: Great leaders don't just create change for today. They build opportunities that empower generations to come.

At Alpha Zeta, we are proud to continue that legacy by developing leaders who will shape the future of agriculture.

Who has inspired your leadership journey?

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’› Leadership Monday

Rachel Carson believed that science, education, and thoughtful stewardship could help shape a better future.

Carson, a marine biologist, author, and conservationist, wrote the groundbreaking book Silent Spring, which encouraged a new understanding of how human actions affect the natural world. Her work inspired generations of scientists, researchers, and agricultural professionals to pursue solutions that balance productivity with environmental stewardship.

Her legacy reminds us that leadership begins with curiosity, a commitment to learning, and the courage to ask important questions.

At Alpha Zeta, we celebrate those who lead through knowledge, innovation, and service while working to strengthen agriculture and the communities it serves.

Happy National Farmers Market Week!
This week, we celebrate the farmers, growers, makers, and communities that make local food possible. Farmers markets connect us to fresh, locally grown products while supporting family farms and strengthening local economies. Visit your local farmers market this week and thank the people who work hard to bring fresh food from the farm to your table.
