Do you know how the tradition of cutting a student’s shirttail after their first solo flight began? 🤔

According to my brief research, the tradition dates back to the early days of flight training, when instructors sat behind their students in tandem aircraft. Before modern headsets and reliable intercoms, communicating in flight wasn’t easy. To get the student’s attention or give instructions, the instructor would literally tug on the back of the student’s shirttail.

After a student’s first solo flight, the instructor would cut off a portion of the shirttail as a symbolic gesture signifying that the student had demonstrated the skills and confidence to fly independently. It represented that the instructor no longer needed to tug on the student’s shirt to provide guidance.

Could you imagine learning to fly without today’s headsets, intercoms, GPS, and other modern technology?! 😳✈️
