Animalcrackers and Little Biscuits ELH

Animalcrackers and Little Biscuits ELH Making extraordinary contributions in the lives of children and families ♥️ Teaching & learning is a two way relationship at Animal Crackers & Little Biscuits.

Through a combination of inquiry and emergent based curriculum , RIE methods and secure attachment philosophies. We prepare children for life, by teaching a multitude of self help skills, mastery of self , a love of literacy and learning. We strongly believe that the brain is most receptive to learning when loving and secure relationships have formed. We provide gentle yet consistent and firm rule

s and boundaries, that are applied age appropriately. Healthy habits and behavior are taught and encouraged by example. Safe risk taking and autonomy allow children to try things out for themselves with supervision and verbal guidance (when needed). Children are included in all activities according to their age and developmental abilities. Animal Crackers & Little Biscuits provides a sensory rich environment. We are Bi-literate in English and Spanish. Additionally, Mrs. Veronica has an ASL vocabulary of 50+ signs, and shares this with the children on a daily basis.

We need to stop asking if a four year old can write their name and start asking if they can climb a tree or hang from the monkey bars. I know it sounds counterintuitive, especially when we are bombarded with the idea that academic success starts with a workbook, but the science of child development tells a very different story.

I see it so often. A child is struggling with handwriting, not because they do not know the letters, but because they do not have the core strength to sit upright at a desk or the shoulder stability to move a pencil across a page. A worksheet is a 2D solution to a 3D problem. If the foundations of the body are not strong, the fine motor skills will always struggle to follow.

When we push children into academic tasks before their bodies are physically ready, we are not giving them a head start. We are actually setting them up for a lifetime of physical fatigue and frustration. If a child has to use all their energy just to keep their body from slumping over, they have no mental energy left for learning.

Our educators know this. When they choose a morning of climbing, digging in the mud, or navigating an obstacle course, they are doing the deep, essential work of school readiness. They are building the core, the grip strength, and the visual tracking skills that will eventually make reading and writing feel easy.

Educators, what is the one thing you wish parents understood about the importance of play over paperwork?

Parents, what is your biggest worry when it becomes to your child being ready for school?

Permissive parenting often sounds kind — but it leaves the developing brain without the structure it needs.

When we remove limits to avoid distress, we’re not protecting children — we’re asking an immature nervous system to self-regulate without support. That’s not kindness. That’s overwhelm.

Brain-based parenting isn’t about control or punishment.
It’s about understanding that the child’s brain is still under construction — and consequences are one of the ways the brain learns cause, effect, responsibility, and repair.

Consequences aren’t about making a child feel bad.
They’re about helping the brain connect actions to outcomes in a safe, predictable way — while an adult stays calm, present, and regulated.

Permissive parenting says: “I don’t want you to feel upset.”
Brain-based parenting says: “I can sit with your upset and keep you safe.”

Boundaries with consequences build neural pathways for self-control.
Not instantly. Not perfectly. But gradually — with repetition, safety, and co-regulation.

Children don’t need fewer consequences.
They need consequences that teach, protect, and guide — not shame.

Imagine if kindergarten were actually built for children.

More movement. More play. More joy.
Fewer delays. Fewer referrals. Fewer “behavior issues.”

Brains would wire the way they’re meant to.
Teachers could breathe again.
Children would love school instead of surviving it.

It’s not radical. It’s developmentally appropriate.

We don’t need to invent a new solution. We just need to return kindergarten to what worked, before we complicated it into something it was never meant to be.
