Hi everyone,

have you heard of the annual Zero Waste Youth Convergence? It takes place every year and attracts more than 200 high school, college students, and young professionals. It is not only a fun way to learn more about zero waste and environmental stewardship, but also a great networking opportunity. There are also lots of volunteer opportunities, which include free admission to the event.

Check out http://www.zerowasteyouthusa.org for more information.

Hey all, we've just set up a pens, pencils, and markers collection box in the Map Library (HSS 289) so go through your desks and declutter! πŸ–ŠβœπŸ–‹

Accepted waste: Pens, pen caps, mechanical pencils, markers, marker caps, permanent markers, and permanent marker caps.

Why recycle pens and markers?
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 1.6 billion Pens are thrown away each year in the US only. This creates a huge amount of waste.
Most Pens and markers are made out of plastic and are not biodegradable. This means that there is a chance that they might never fully decompose and stay in the landfill forever.
A lot of pens also end up in the ocean where they become harmful for wildlife. Furthermore, they can break down into micro plastic and end up in our drinking water.

What can you do?
Help us create a more sustainable SFSU and reduce waste by:
- disposing your old pens and markers in our TerraCycle Zero Waste Box
- Tell your peers how and where to recycle their old pens and markers
- Buy recycled or biodegradable pens @ San Francisco State University

Our first meeting was a success!
We are happy to see a lot of familiar faces again and to welcome a few new club members.

Our goals for the spring 2020 semester are:
- Bring together students interested in geography and the environment
- Raise awareness about current environmental issues
- Create a more sustainable SFSU
- Give back to the community by organizing beach clean ups and volunteer at various sites
- Do fun activities, such as hiking, rock wall climbing, game nights, etc.

Feel free to message or e-mail us if you are interested in joining our club. We welcome all SFSU students, who are interested in helping us reach our goals while having a great time together.

Date & time for the next meeting and activity will be announced soon.
