Students at Pali Charter High took their creativity, resilience, and whittling skills to the next level creating some really terrific pieces. Soap was soft yet brittle. One wrong move and your project could crumble in your hands. With basswood, students put the methods they practiced on soap (sweep cut, stop cut, v cut, and pull cut) into play. Additionally, they needed to constantly hone their knives on the stropping block to ensure they didn’t use too much pressure while whittling. Controlled, smooth cuts prevailed as did the students. Bravo!

Back at Pali and back at it. Students just finished their soap carvings, practicing safety and whittling techniques in anticipation of their wood whittling projects. Can’t wait to see what they create next!

In Makerspace 1, we did a quick one-day build for Halloween and made “Candy coffins” and filled them with craggily bits to hide candy in when they got home. Can you spot some of the other builds students made?

Makerspace 1 students at Pali Charter High are a mix of Freshman to Seniors. It’s elective where students push themselves out of their comfort zone to create projects within specific constraints. This is the tiny prototype where students must use at least one of three attachment techniques. As always, these students continue to impress with their creativity, innovation, and ingenuity.

Thank you to the Brooks family for your thoughtful and generous gift and note!! Our classrooms are carpeted which means cleaning up cardboard bits can be extremely tedious. Now the students and I will be able to make a huge dent and hopefully take some burden away from our wonderful custodians.

Fall Semester 2024 - Artifact #1. Tiny prototypes. Students worked with cardboard and hot glue to creatively use right angle joints, curved joints, and/or concave/convex joints in the creation of their tiny prototypes. Encouraged to build things they are passionate about or that are culturally relevant to them, these Pali students blew me away yet again!
