The Pentathlon is an Olympic-style game celebrated by fifth-grade Waldorf students across the continent. Students compete in five events: javelin, wrestling, discus, long jump, and running.

πŸ€Όβ€β™€οΈπŸ₯πŸƒβ€β™€οΈβ β€œThe Pentathlon is not an expression of our human individuality. It is an expression of the humanity we all share. It is not a competition to see who is the strongest, or the fastest, or the cleverest. It is a celebration of the wonder and beauty of childhood in its fullest expression. In fact, pentathletes are judged not solely on how far, for example, they throw the javelin, but on how beautifully they throw, and how supportive they are of their fellow athletes.” - Peter Lawton, Class Teacher

🎭✨ Our recent Middle School Electives Showcase was a joyful celebration of creativity, craftsmanship, expression, and student dedication.

It featured a rich variety of artistic and practical work our students engage in through electives, including choir, costume design, theater history, fencing demonstrations, needle felting, book binding, sewing, crochet and textile arts, drawing, sculpture, and a very special Shakespeare Showcase performance.

In Waldorf education, the middle school years are a time when students are developing greater independence, self-expression, and creative capacity. Electives offer meaningful opportunities for students to explore new skills, work with their hands, collaborate with others, and discover areas of personal interest and strength.

Whether singing together, shaping sculpture, stitching textiles, or stepping into Shakespearean performance, students engage both imagination and discipline while building confidence through lived experience and artistic practice.

We are so grateful to our teachers for bringing these experiences to life and to our students for sharing their beautiful work with the community. 🌿

The culmination of the Third Grade year is a two night and three day field trip to a biodynamic working farm!🚜🌾 Our students deepen their reverence for the farmer’s role in tending the earth and nourishing life.

Our third graders develop an appreciation of the important work of the farmer throughout the year in nurturing, cultivating, and protecting the different elements of nature.

These experiences include baking, canning, along with this visit to the farm. The children also plant and harvest a small garden at the school where they witness the cycles of nature and their own capacity to care for it. πŸ₯¬πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸ§…πŸ…

πŸ“’βœ©πŸ“šπŸŽ’βœŽπŸ« This year at the Gnome Library was busier than ever! We were able to welcome all 3rd through 6th grade classes for bi-weekly visits. We held our first ever Children's Book Week Raffle. We had a Used Book Sale booth at the Spring Faire for the first time.

Participation in last summer's Read-A-Thon was way up. And, we've had over 4,500 circulations this school year!

🌟 Gold stars to the students in Ms. DeMatteo's 3rd grade class for most checkouts by class!

πŸ§‘β€πŸ«πŸ§‘ During Teacher Appreciation Week, we pause to recognize the many educators, caregivers, and staff members whose daily work helps shape the life of our school community.

At MBCS, learning is supported not only by class teachers, but also by subject teachers, assistants, intervention and special education staff, caregivers, volunteers, administrators, and board members who work together with care and intention to support each child’s growth.

In Waldorf education, teaching is rooted in relationship. Thoughtful preparation, attentive listening, creativity, flexibility, and steady care all help create the conditions where children can grow with confidence and curiosity.

Every member of our community contributes something meaningful to the rhythm and warmth of school life. And to our teachers, who walk beside students each day with patience, dedication, and heart, we offer our deepest gratitude.🍎✨

βœοΈπŸ”‘πŸ From county champion to state finalist! We are so proud of MBCS 5th grader Declan R, who recently competed in the State Spelling Bee and earned an impressive 8th place finish overall.

After winning the Monterey County Spelling Bee earlier this year, Declan continued on a journey of focus, perseverance, and dedication at the state level. πŸ†πŸ“šβ

In Waldorf education, we honor not only achievement, but the steady process of growth that leads there. Moments like these reflect sustained effort, confidence, and the willingness to meet challenges with determination.

Outstanding achievement, Declan! You represented MBCS so well, we are incredibly proud of you! 🌟

πŸŽ¨πŸ§‘β€πŸŽ¨ Congratulations to Quinn Khalsa, Credit Union Art Contest Winner! In celebration of Youth Financial Literacy Month, Bay Federal Credit Union invited students across the region to create artwork for a sticker design contest centered on what saving money and making thoughtful financial choices means to them.

πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ₯‡ We are thrilled to share that our very own 5th grader, Quinn Khalsa, earned first place!

Quinn’s design will now be featured on Bay Federal Credit Union’s official stickers, sharing his creative vision with the wider community.

✨ Quinn shared that he is grateful for the drawing and layout skills developed during main lesson work, which supported him in bringing his design to life with clarity and intention.

In Waldorf education, artistic work is woven throughout learning, helping students develop observation, composition, and the confidence to express ideas visually. 🌿

Please join us in celebrating Quinn’s wonderful accomplishment! πŸŽ‰

πŸŽΆπŸŽ’πŸŽ‘πŸŒπŸ–οΈ The middle school choir went to their first music festival competition at the Santa Cruz and they won 1st place with a ranking of superior!

We went against middle school choirs from all over California (much bigger than us). Not only that but our own Aurora, from Ballard's 7th grade class, won best middle school solo vocalist!

πŸ™ŒπŸ½ If you see any choir members, give them a congratulatory high five! They worked really hard for this and we celebrate the arts here!

🧑 A special thank you to Ms. Marly for her guidance and dedication in preparing students for this memorable performance.
