Many Children can't read on grade level. It isn't the fault of parents or teachers! School curriculum for decades have been teaching a "Whole Language Approach." This asked students to basically guess words that they have no knowledge of decoding the words so they guess based on the pictures. We should have been teaching a systematic approach to phonics! I am a teacher who left the classroom. We are told by our district to teach a curriculum. Yes, Curriculum has phonics in it, but most of them teach the phonics in bits and pieces. Which doesn't help a child when reading a leveled text. Once the child reaches 4th grade, they do not get pictures, so they have to resort in just guessing words based on the skills they already know. They haven't learned some phonic skills. They already have a coping skill of guessing so they translate that to bigger texts. Students of all ages are missing the mark on tests because they can't read it themselves! Now that I'm not in the classroom anymore... did you know parents... YOU CAN OPT YOUR CHILD OUT OF THIS HORRIBLE TEST!!!!
It's true... just tell your school you don't want your child taking this test. You will keep them home during test days. The schools and teachers can't tell you this unfortunately. All teachers hate this test as much as the students do! The MAPs test and others like it... does give teachers good valuable information though so don't pull your child from all tests... just the state test!

I lied to my students today. You see, today was the first day of state testing. They showed up filled with anxiety. So I did what any good teacher would do. I lied.
