Vauhini Vara was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, to Indian immigrants, and grew up there and in the suburbs of Oklahoma City and Seattle. She discovered a love of words early on and in 1995, 12-year-old Vauhini spelled her way to an incredible 3rd place finish at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. 🐝 Her love of words was just starting to blossom.

Vauhini has built an amazing career as a journalist for publications like The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times Magazine. As an author, her debut novel, The Immortal King Rao, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and her latest nonfiction book is an award-winning bestseller. 📖 Beyond her own writing, she empowers the next generation by mentoring incarcerated writers and aspiring authors to help them share their own stories.

From the Bee stage to a lifetime of impact and inspiration. Thank you for everything, Vauhini!

With incredibly heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Dolly Parton. A singular talent and an even better human being, Dolly devoted her life to the power of words – in her music, in her relationships and in her generosity. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has gifted more than 332,000,000 books to children since 1995, nurturing a love of reading and storytelling across the globe.

Her legacy of love and literacy will live on forever. Rest in peace, Dolly. 🦋

Happy birthday to the endlessly impressive Zaila Avant-garde, champion of the 2021 Bee! 🐝 This summer, Zaila was a Summer Honors Undergraduate Research Program (SHURP) scholar at Harvard Medical School. This fall, she'll continue her studies at the University of Maryland, majoring in Cell Biology & Molecular Genetics.

This year is the 60th anniversary of the 1966 Bee, when 13-year-old Robert Wake of Texas captured the trophy. 🏆 Bob went on to earn a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a PhD from Brown University in algebra and number theory, and a law degree from Harvard University. He enjoyed a long career as a college professor, Assistant Attorney General for the state of Maine, and General Counsel for the Maine Bureau of Insurance. He retired earlier this year. ⭐️ Congratulations Bob on an incredible career!
