Both chlorine and saltwater can be damaging to your hair by drying it out, stripping it of its natural oils, and irritating your scalp -- especially if you have color treated hair. Here are a few ways to protect your hair this summer.

1. Shower before getting into the pool.
Your hair and skin are like sponges. Showering before getting in the pool makes it less likely for your hair to soak up the pool water and its damaging chemicals.

2. Apply a natural oil.
Applying coconut or olive oil to your hair before getting in the pool or the ocean provides a protective coating for your hair which will help keep it moisturized while you're having fun. Apply either one to your hair after getting it wet.

3. Spray your hair with leave in conditioner. The oils in the conditioner will repel and defend your hair against chemicals and saltwater (just like we mentioned above), but the conditioner also keeps your hair soft so you have fewer tangles when you get out of the water.
