“As fall sets in across the country, the bill is coming due for the hottest summer on record in the United States. The last three months were about three degrees above average, hotter than the Dust Bowl summer of 1936 and the heat dome of 2021, and tens of millions of people can’t afford to pay for the air-conditioning that helped keep them safe in the deadly heat. About one in six U.S. households is already behind on its utility bills, according to federal data. More than a dozen hot-weather states like Arizona, Georgia, Virginia and Oklahoma restrict shut-offs during the most dangerous heat, so disconnections tend to peak in October, when a climate crisis turns into a collection notice.”

Record heat and a rising demand for electricity are closing in on Oklahoma families trying to keep the lights on and the AC running.

Community in. Care and assistance out.

That is how TOPSS works.

Earlier this month, we described TOPSS as a community GoFundMe with staff, accountability, and coordination.

One person gives $10. Someone else donates groceries. A volunteer packs a food box. A business holds a food drive. A monthly donor helps keep fresh milk in our Market.

TOPSS brings it all together.

Those individual contributions become stocked grocery carts, deliveries to people who cannot leave home, fresh milk for families, and assistance for neighbors facing a crisis.

No one person has to provide everything. Each of us contributes what we can, and together, our community makes meaningful help possible.

There are still a few days left in Hunger Action Month. If you have been thinking about taking action, consider where you might fit into this community effort.
