Gnarly Branch Studio

Gnarly Branch Studio Meet Pam:
Weaver & Graphic Designer. Say Hello to Matt:
Spoonwright & Outdoor Educator. Matt went on to become a zookeeper, while Pam received a B.A.

Gnarly Branch Studio is the creation of Matt and Pam Furches, Oxford Area High School (OAHS) sweethearts. They began Gnarly Branch Studio in 2010 to create practical, playful and whimsical objects, and with the evolution of their studio are constantly adding new pieces based on inspiration from Nature. Both native Pennsylvanians, Pam and Matt began their friendship under the tutelage of Don Orner

during art classes at OAHS. in graphic design from Tyler School of Art. Although both started their careers on very different paths, the thread of creativity has blossomed as did their relationship. After a 7 year courtship involving many backpacking adventures, the couple married, outside of course, at Ridley Creek State Park flanked by two towering sycamore trees. In 2010, their quest for connection led them to move West and become a part of a little town called Boulder, Utah (Population 226). Matt is now a Head Instructor at the internationally recognized Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS) and Pam is the Owner/Creative Director at her own studio (PFD). While both have busy seasons for their primary careers, Gnarly Branch Studio affords them a tangible, creative outlet in the winter months. Their joint studio is wherever they may roam, consisting of a bag or two of tools, a box of materials, an axe, a loom, and a keen eye for transforming sustainable raw materials into elegant and simple works of art. Whether it is a hand carved spoon, whittled down from a Juniper branch or a woven strap inspired by the hues of Autumn, Matt and Pam intend to connect the color, texture, and beauty of nature with the recipient.
