08/11/2026: At the Oxford Kiwanis weekly meeting, Oxford Postmaster David Gay provided an interesting look at the operations of the Oxford Post Office. He discussed some of the challenges posed by competition from other package delivery services, while emphasizing the dedication and quality of the local postal staff he is proud to lead. David also expressed his appreciation for the enthusiastic support that he and his staff receive from the Oxford community.

David shared his own journey from mail carrier to postmaster, describing a career that he has thoroughly enjoyed. He noted that one of the most rewarding aspects of his years with the Postal Service has been the many friendships he has made along the way.

07/21/2026: The Oxford Kiwanis Club welcomed Leon Simpson, a member of the Butler County Senior Fair Board, who shared the history, mission, and enduring importance of the Butler County Fair, taking place this week at the county fairgrounds.

Leon explained that the Fair Board is committed to preserving the past, embracing the present, and envisioning the future while continuing a tradition that began with the first Butler County Fair on October 13–14, 1836. Today, the fair remains a showcase for local agriculture, featuring livestock, produce, farming equipment, educational exhibits, carnival rides, tractor pulls, rodeo events, and the always-popular demolition derby.

A central focus of the fair is encouraging youth through 4-H and FFA, helping young people develop leadership, responsibility, and practical skills.

Leon was joined by his granddaughter, Addison ("Addie") Sloan, an enthusiastic and accomplished FFA member who has participated in 4-H and FFA activities at the local, county, state, and national levels. Addie reminded club members of the meaning behind the 4-H pledge:

Head – clearer thinking and problem-solving
Heart – greater loyalty and stronger personal values
Hands – larger service and workforce preparedness
Health – better living and healthy lifestyles

The Oxford Kiwanis Club is proudly celebrating its Centennial in 2026—100 years of serving the Oxford community and improving the lives of children through service, leadership, and volunteerism.

As part of this milestone celebration, the Club has donated two commemorative benches and four trees to the Oxford Area Trails system. These additions will serve as a lasting tribute to a century of service and symbolize the Club's enduring commitment to the Oxford community for generations to come.

The Club is also looking to the future. As shown below, membership continues to grow as Oxford Kiwanis approaches its Centennial goal of 100 members. With new members joining and new opportunities to serve, the Club is preparing to begin its second century with the same spirit of service that has defined its first.

The Oxford Kiwanis Club remains committed to the Kiwanis mission: improving the world one child and one community at a time.

07/14/2026: The Oxford Kiwanis Club welcomed Sara Morris, instructor in Butler Tech's Environmental and Conservation Engineering program, who shared her inspiring presentation, "Green Education for a Green Future."

Sara spoke about her lifelong passion for conservation, which began with childhood adventures exploring Harkers Run in Oxford. She has transformed that early love of nature into a career, inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders through her work at Butler Tech's new campus.

Her presentation highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship and demonstrated how education can prepare students to build a more sustainable future. The Oxford Kiwanis Club thanks Sara for sharing her enthusiasm and dedication to conservation with our members.

06/30/2026: At its June 30 meeting, the Oxford Kiwanis Club was honored to receive a $2,000 donation from the McCullough-Hyde Foundation in support of the club's annual Back to School Bash.

This year's Bash will take place on Saturday, August 16, at Oxford Community Park, providing local children and families with school supplies, activities, and a fun start to the new school year.

Pictured are representatives of the McCullough-Hyde Foundation along with a delighted Kiwanis member Jennifer Marston, whose vision, leadership, and tireless efforts have made the Back to School Bash a tremendous success year after year. Thank you to the McCullough-Hyde Foundation for helping make this important community event possible!

06/23/2026: The Oxford Kiwanis Club welcomed Jack Keegan, who shared highlights from his remarkable career as a wine educator. Since joining Miami University in 1995 to manage its greenhouses, Jack has introduced more than 8,000 students to the world of wine through his popular wine appreciation course.

His presentation was filled with fascinating stories and historical insights. One fact that surprised many in attendance was that Ohio was the nation's leading wine-producing state in 1850.

06/16/2026: As part of the Oxford Kiwanis Club’s Centennial Celebration, longtime member Paul Allen presented a look back at the club’s history from 1976 to 2001. The presentation traced the club’s growth from its 50th anniversary through a period of expanding community service, strong youth programs, and important organizational milestones.

Highlights included the addition of Circle K, Key Club, and Builders Club programs, the club’s sponsorship of Scouting, and the historic decision to welcome women as members in 1989. This led to several leadership milestones, including Lee Shawver becoming the club’s first female Treasurer in 1992 and Lou Aulds serving as its first female President in 1996.

Paul also reviewed the history of Pancake Day, Oxford Kiwanis’ signature fundraiser, along with other successful projects such as Peanut Days and the Kelly-Miller Circus. The presentation concluded with a look at the club’s many community achievements, including recognition for its literacy initiatives and participation in Kiwanis International’s campaign to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders worldwide.

The retrospective highlighted a quarter century of growth, service, and community impact that helped shape the Oxford Kiwanis Club as it entered the 21st century.

Brian Smith, Executive Director of the Butler County Historical Society, visited the June 9 meeting of the Oxford Kiwanis Club where he took our group on a guided tour of locations in Butler County which are confined to our past and no longer exist. This fascinating journey stimulated ghosts of years ago and memories of days gone by.
