Central Children's Home of North Carolina, Inc. mourns the loss of Michael Robert Lewis Alston, Sr., who served as Executive Director of this historic agency from 1985 to 2008. For more than 23 years, he made a tremendous impact on the lives of many children entrusted to his care. Even though we mourn the loss, we also pause to celebrate the life and legacy that he left behind. We will always remember and be thankful for his leadership, advocacy and compassion for children.

In 1948 Dr. Ellen Winston, the newly appointed Commissioner of Public Welfare, recommended that the home employ a social worker. At this time social workers, especially those with any training, were not common in Children's Homes, although the Baptist Childrens's Homes had a social work department since 1924, but in the next few years more and more children's homes were to develop this critical service. For the first time the mission statement of the Central Children's Home of North Carolina came to include a statement affirming its commitment to providing an "individual understanding of the child." On campus there was much more activity of a recreational nature - alllowing the chance for children to be children. A Boy Scout Troop was founded, there weas a Colored Orphanage Band and a Girls Choir. Individual achievement was also recognized by ny the awarding of the Robert Shepard scholarship and two prizes, the Martha Hamilin Brooks Memorial prize for girls, and the Ottaway Hamme Prize for boys!
