For Sophia Metcalf, success has never meant choosing just one path. A lifelong love of science, music, and horses has shaped her journey from Oxford Preparatory School to NC State University and, today, a career in molecular genetics.
A member of the Oxford Prep Class of 2020, Sophia graduated Summa Cum Laude and credits OPS with giving her the freedom to explore her many interests. She played violin from the age of five, performed solos, participated in chorus and band, competed in cross-country and track, and helped create opportunities for students to become involved in equestrian activities.
“OPS was always open to new ideas and finding alternative ways for students to get involved,” she recalls.
At NC State, Sophia discovered her passion for genetics through the Life Sciences First Year program. She earned a degree in genetics and a minor in psychology, served as a teaching assistant, and gained valuable research experience in genetics and molecular biology. Her time at NC State also pushed her beyond her comfort zone and helped her become more confident and willing to explore new opportunities.
Alongside academics, Sophia continued pursuing her passion for horses. With more than 15 years of riding experience, she has competed in dressage, eventing, hunter-jumpers, and equitation. She is a United States Dressage Federation Bronze Medalist, competed with NC State’s Dressage IDA Club team, and has earned national-level recognition in equestrian competition. She continues working toward her Silver Medal and hopes to eventually become certified to teach riding.
Today, Sophia works as a Molecular Genetics Technologist at Labcorp, performing molecular diagnostic testing for hereditary conditions. She has already had the opportunity to support FDA studies and is excited about the future of the genetics field.
Her advice to current Griffins? “Reach further than academics, you’re going to use those experiences in the rest of your life.”
Sophia’s journey is a wonderful reminder that education is about more than a classroom. It is about curiosity, exploration, and discovering where your passions can take you.
We are incredibly proud of Sophia and can’t wait to see where her curiosity, determination, and passion take her next!
