Miami University Geography Department Geography at Miami University is a community of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to making plans, and going places..

The Department of Geography at Miami was founded in 1906. Today our faculty and students explore cutting-edge issues like urbanization, globalization, and environmental change. We prepare our undergraduate majors in Geography and Urban and Regional Planning for employment, graduate school, travel, and life. Alumni from our small but focused M.A. program succeed in professional and academic careers. Our faculty are active researchers in global development and politics, urbanization and planning, and human-environment relationships, among others.

As you saw in Dr. Prytherch's email last week, there will be a merger of GEO and GLG departments in SHD in the coming years. With that there will be an update to the names of undergraduate programs (majors, minors, etc.) offered for future students.

The faculty would like to gather your ideas for this future curriculum, and department chairs will be available to answer any questions you may have about the merger.

Please attend one (1) of the following open house events to share your thoughts. There will be SDS pizza!

We are sad to share the news that our colleague Howell C. Lloyd recently passed away. Dr. Lloyd taught in the Department of Geography from 1963 to 2006, in addition to serving as longtime director of International Studies and teaching at Miami's Luxembourg campus. An Ohio native, Howell grew to became a truly international teacher-scholar and person, impacting students, colleagues, and friends around the world. We would like to express our sincerest condolences to his wife Melani and daughter Gwendolen. Howell helped connect Miami to the world. Congratulations to our very own, David Prytherch, for receiving the 2026 AAG Globe Book Award for Public Understanding of Geography! 👏 David published his book, Reclaiming the Road: Mobility Justice Beyond Complete Streets, last year. David is passionate about influencing the way Americans think about streets and transportation, advocating for more inclusive and accessible public spaces. Way to go, David.
