The PDD department was thrilled to conclude this semester's seminar series with an exceptional session by Dr. Akm Khairuzzaman, a Senior Reviewer at the FDA’s Office of Pharmaceutical Quality in CDER.

Dr. Khairuzzaman provided invaluable insights into the principles of distributed manufacturing and 3Dprinting in pharmaceutical drug products. His talk explored the motivation behind adopting 3D printing, the flexibility offered by various platforms for creating complex drug designs, and the emerging regulatory challenges shaping the future of these technologies.

Our students were deeply inspired by his presentation and actively engaged in a thought-provoking Q&A session, further enriching their understanding of this innovative field.

This seminar was the perfect conclusion to a semester filled with inspiring talks by distinguished speakers from across the pharmaceutical industry.

Last week, as part of the PDD seminar series, Dr. Niloofar Heshmati from Ashland delivered an insightful seminar titled "Design of Smart Nanomedicine for Effective Cancer Treatment". Dr. Heshmati discussed treatment strategies such as pH-responsive, enzyme-responsive, and metabolism-inspired therapies. She elaborated on tumor-targeting mechanisms, distinguishing between passive and active targeting, and emphasized the clinical limitations of passive targeting due to discrepancies between preclinical models and clinical applications. The seminar also featured two case studies showcasing the preparation of articles using and -fluidic-reactor methods, focusing on their , evaluation, applications, and . We are grateful for Dr. Heshmati's valuable insights and her contributions to advancing our understanding of in cancer treatment.

The PDD department had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Dana Moseson (Senior Principal Scientist, Pfizer) for an insightful seminar on "The Solubility Advantage of Amorphous Pharmaceutical Materials". She walked us through the history of our understanding of - from observing their higher and different to the current amorphous solubility equations and corrections. Her talk shed light on the amorphous solubility determination methods and their issues. Our students learned about , phases, the impact of additive partitioning into them, and on the solubility of vs amorphous drugs, and their applications in designing and interpreting in vitro solubility measurement and physiologically-based .

Following the seminar, Dr. Moseson held a town hall with our department’s students, engaging them in a discussion about career development, honing critical thinking and writing skills, and overcoming common research challenges. She provided practical advice on navigating conferences, resources for staying up-to-date with the latest research in the field, and making the most of graduate programs. Her willingness to share insights on these diverse topics was invaluable, leaving students better equipped for the next steps in their academic and professional journeys.
