To the Class of 2026, I wish you nothing but the best as your journey through life truly begins now.
Six years ago, you filled this classroom day in and day out with laughter and commiserating, with smiles and with tears, and, hopefully, a few life lessons alongside the official curricular lessons.
You were my first middle school group, my original sixth graders, the only non-teenagers I had ever had in my classroom. It was a steep learning curve for me, coming out of having taught at the high school level for 7 years prior. Though it wasn’t always easy, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had you as the crew that broke me in to the world of middle school.
Our time together in sixth grade was cut short that March, as the world was turned upside down due to a global pandemic. We didn’t get that normal end of the year goodbye, and for some, that seemingly innocuous Friday in early spring proved to be the last time we’d cross paths. For some, you stopped by when normalcy began to return, we said hello in the hallways, we chatted at gas stations and drive thrus, you’ve sent me emails and physical letters, and I’ve cheered you on at sporting events.
Whether your journey since then has taken you to OHS, Bay Path, the workforce, or elsewhere, I wish you nothing but happiness and good fortune. You deserve it. Mist importantly, whatever you do and wherever life takes you, make yourself proud. You owe it to yourself, and only yourself. Each and every one of you is capable of great things — whether you had great grades in Ancient Civ or struggled to get by; whether you confidently shared out or literally couldn’t bear to use your voice.
Do great things. Be great. Live life. Carpe diem.
You’ve got this.
