Toter, our blue organics recycling toter with the yellow lid, has gone missing, and we’d really like to bring him home!

Wesley, Resourceful Recycling, and Shiawassee Recycles are devastated by Toter’s disappearance, and we hope he will be returned safely.

Have household hazardous waste you need to get rid of safely?

The Shiawassee County Health Department is hosting a free Household Hazardous Waste Collection on Saturday, October 24, from 9:00–11:00 AM at Durand City Hall.

This is a great opportunity to safely dispose of items like oil-based paints, pesticides, household batteries, cleaning supplies, antifreeze, and other materials that should not go in your regular trash.

No appointment is necessary. Be sure to review the flyer for the full list of accepted materials and transportation guidelines before you go!

Have you ever seen or heard 40 yards of glass being recycled?

Turn up the volume! This incredible video from our Shiawassee Recycles partner, Great Lakes Resource Recovery part of the Great Lakes Family of Companies, gives you a look at what 40 yards of glass sounds like as it enters the recycling process.

This is about more than just keeping glass out of the landfill. Great Lakes Resource Recovery is helping turn locally collected bottles from Main Beverage Company into a valuable resource that can be reused, supporting the circular economy and keeping these resources right here in our region.

It's a pretty cool reminder that the everyday things we put in the recycling stream can have a life beyond the curb.

Recycling Myth or Fact?

"If it's plastic, I can recycle it."

❌ MYTH!
Plastic isn't just one material. There are many different types and forms of plastic, and not all of them can be processed through the same recycling system. Some items, such as plastic bags, wrappers, and other flexible plastics, can cause problems for recycling equipment or require a different way to be collected.

That's why it's important to check before tossing something in your recycling bin. If you're not sure where an item belongs, visit ShiawasseeRecycles.com and use the Waste Wizard to find out!

What happens to your food scraps when they go in the trash?

When food waste ends up in a landfill, it doesn't have the same opportunity to naturally break down and become a useful resource known as compost. Keeping food scraps out of the landfill and sending them to composting instead can help turn that waste into something beneficial for our community.

That's why Shiawassee Recycles, with the help of our friends at Resourceful Recycling, is collecting food scraps at the Owosso Farmers Market that will go to Great Lakes Fusion in Vernon Township.

Getting started is easy:
$10 for a Shiawassee Recycles food scrap bucket, which includes free drop-off through October 31
Bring your own bucket (5 gallons or smaller) for $5 per drop-off
Find us at the Owosso Farmers Market every Saturday

It's a small change at home that can make a big difference in how we think about our waste.

Great Lakes Resource Recovery is helping turn local organic waste into a valuable resource through innovative composting solutions, creating new opportunities to divert materials from landfills and strengthen our local circular economy.

As one of the partners behind Shiawassee Recycles, Bryan Marks and his team have been instrumental in helping us build a stronger local approach to recycling and the circular economy. We are excited to see this next step in their work and the possibilities it creates for our region.
