The excitement has been building across the district this week as we prepare to welcome our students back tomorrow for the first day of the 2026-2027 school year!

It’s been a busy and eventful few days throughout the district:
📚 Our staff came together for professional development to reconnect, learn, and prepare to make a difference for our students.
📣 Our Community Pep Rally at Willman Field brought students, families, staff, and community members out to kick off the year with school spirit.
🏫 Families visited our schools during open houses, meeting teachers, exploring classrooms, and getting ready for a successful year.
🚌 Some of our youngest Trojans learned all about riding the big yellow school bus during our Littlest Trojans Kindergarten Bus Orientation this morning.

The classrooms are ready and the floors are shining. The buses are fueled up. Food is prepped. Our staff is ready. Now all we need are our students!

Let’s make it a great year together as we Choose to Make a Difference!

Today, Superintendent Steve Brooks welcomed Owosso Public Schools team members back for the 2026-2027 school year! Nearly 400 staff members gathered in the Owosso Performing Arts Center for an energetic kickoff filled with Trojan spirit and featuring guest speaker Trey McKenney.

Trey is a guard on the Michigan Wolverine men’s basketball team. He was an NCAA national champion and earned Big Ten All-Freshman honors in 2026. He was also Michigan's 2025 Mr. Basketball, USA Basketball Gold Medalist, and many experts believe it's not a matter of if—but when—we'll hear his name called on NBA Draft night as an NBA Lottery Pick.

Owosso Public Schools’ theme for the 2026-2027 school year is “Choose to Make a Difference”. During his visit, Trey shared an important message about the power of relationships and the role others have played in his success both on and off the court.

Superintendent Brooks shared, “It was an honor to have Trey McKenney as our guest and see how a young, rising athletic star values the relationships that have helped him attain the success he is experiencing on the basketball court, in the classroom, and in life.”

Additionally, Superintendent Brooks thanked our veterans, the OPS team members who worked all summer to provide services for our students and to prepare for the upcoming school year, and all the volunteers who worked to pass the recent school millage. He also shared district goals and updates and an inspiring video of Owosso High School students presenting a Starfish Award to a teacher, coach or other individual who made a lasting impact on their life.

We’re inspired, energized, and ready to Choose to Make a Difference for our students, our colleagues, and our community.

Here’s to a great year, Trojan Nation!

Owosso Public Schools’ new teachers participated in two full days of professional learning this week in preparation for the 2026–2027 school year. On Tuesday, new teachers connected with instructional coaches, mentors, department heads, and teacher leaders to learn more about our curriculum, instructional expectations, and the district's overall instructional philosophy.

On Wednesday, the group began the day with breakfast and an opportunity to get to know members of our administrative team and board of education. Following breakfast, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Cathy Dwyer and Mentor Coordinator Jessica McClung led a session on district policies, procedures, expectations, and resources to help our newest staff members transition successfully into Owosso Public Schools. The day also included a bus tour of the district, giving teachers an opportunity to visit our different facilities and learn more about the Owosso community.

This outstanding group of educators brought tremendous enthusiasm and positivity to both days. We are incredibly excited to welcome these teachers to the Owosso team and cannot wait to see the positive contributions they will make to our students, district, and community throughout the coming year and beyond!

The Owosso Public Schools Transportation Department is busy preparing for another great school year! Please review these important transportation updates:

•Complete the Transportation Registration Form as soon as possible if:
🚌You have a new bus rider, including incoming kindergarten students (one form per student).
🚌Your returning bus rider has a new address, attends a different school, or has a new pick-up or drop-off location.
🚌Link to form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe80DxRSn2kh1wz5HiBFyvbNBQeNQfic-zyTjqxSA45Cdo7Ww/viewform

•Kindergarten Bus Orientation: Incoming kindergarten students who will ride the bus are invited to a special orientation on Wednesday, August 19, the day before school begins. We encourage kindergarten families to participate to meet your child’s bus driver and become familiar with the bus route and routines. One adult may ride the morning route with their Littlest Trojan, visit the school, meet the bus monitors and support staff, and then return home on the bus. An RSVP is required. Transportation Director Mr. DeLong is currently contacting all kindergarten families with details.

•Bus Routes: Routes will be available on the district website and the My Ride K-12 app beginning August 14. Because routes may change as registrations are finalized, please verify your child's route again on Wednesday, August 19, before the first day of school.

•Bus Passes: Students may pick up their bus passes during school open houses. This year, every bus rider will receive a plastic pass holder and retractable lanyard. Bus passes are required each day—your pass is your ticket to ride!

•Questions? Contact the Transportation Department at 989-725-7665. Office hours are Monday–Friday, 7–10a.m. and 1–5 p.m. You can download the My Ride K-12 app and find helpful information on the Transportation webpage: https://www.owosso.k12.mi.us/transportation.
