CELEBRATING Esprit de Corps WWII part 8.
World War II part is often referred to as "the last good war". Not that there is anything good in warfare, but rather the comment is a reflection on the fact that it was clearly marked as good verses evil. While the allies were in no way perfectly good (is any nation) only olympian mental and philosophical gymnastics could find good in the Axis Nations waging war. Let's agree, The Axis Nations were not good people. Appealing to our higher angels of virtue and decency, our national leaders invoked the civic righteousness for Americans to do their part. The recruiting posters and wartime stateside posters told a big message in a small space. Often they left the meaning of the message in the mind of the beholder. Like a good story teller, they engaged the imagination of the audience to draw out the conclusion or the "how then should we live?" We framed the cause of Good verses Evil in the recruiting posters that were in every Post Office, Government Building and even grocery stores. This was total war, we were all in and everyone was expected to know the object of war clearly defined. True, unpleasant things happened in WWII, but we didn't start this war. We were committed to ending it at any cost. And we did. WWII Recruiting posters reminded us that the freedom and the common spirit existing in the members of a group and inspiring enthusiasm, devotion, and strong regard for the honor of the group. In other words, the spirit for the cause, that inspired our Revolutionary Founders lived and is alive and well in the 1943 soldiers about to embark on the total war and unconditional surrender of the forces of Axis Evil.
