This week we celebrated Cardinal Hickey Week and honored the founder of our school, Cardinal James A. Hickey! In celebration of the life and legacy of our school’s namesake, our 8th grade students read fun facts about Cardinal Hickey during our daily announcements (see below!), and all grades said the rosary, colored special pictures, and brought in cans for a school-wide food drive. Our weekly School Mass was also led by our 3rd grade students in Cardinal Hickey's honor!

Fun Facts about Cardinal James A. Hickey:

Cardinal Hickey was born in Michigan on October 11, 1920.

Cardinal Hickey's dad was a dentist during the Depression and provided care for people who couldn't afford it. This explains why Cardinal Hickey did so much to care for the poor.

Cardinal Hickey was a bishop consecutively in Ohio (1974-1980) and Washington/Maryland (1980-2000).

Cardinal Hickey was the Archbishop of Washington for twenty years from 1980 to 2000.

Cardinal Hickey's famous quote when he was bishop was "Veritatem In Cariatate" which means "Truth in Charity."

Cardinal Hickey passed away on October 24, 2004 at the age of 84. He died at the Jean Jugan Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Washington, DC.
