3 years, in the then booming economy, Scott & Harlene and a team of nearly 50 instructors were providing piano & keyboard lessons to more than 360 students in their homes and a waiting list developed once again,

Over these 20+ years, the McGowans and their instructors have provided lessons to nearly 3,000 students. In 2015, in conjunction with their rebranding, Playtime Arts Academy began offering in-home guitar & voice lessons as well. In August of 2017, Harlene died suddenly. Within a couple of years Scott made the definitive decision to gradually phase out the employment arm of his music school while building back up his own teaching schedule - a return to basics. As of the fall of 2021 Scott is teaching just over 40 students - mostly remotely as a handful of remaining instructors continue to teach a minimal number of students. As an additional helpful resource, our youtube channel provides examples of songs that will inspire and motivate students, video recordings of some of our more advanced students to help inspire our newer students as well as relevant videos of topical interest to the families of our music students. In combination with simplifying and going remote -recital seasons - which were suspended for a couple of years following Harlene’s passing have morphed into a single date each May through Zoom on light not only of the pandemic but because of the number of newer students who live far outside of the original serving areas.

Our Story

Co-founder, Scott McGowan began providing piano & keyboard lessons in students' homes in 1993 and in 1996 he convinced his wife, Harlene whom he married in 1994 to join him by taking the students on his waiting list.

Just as Scott had when he first ventured out on his own as a free-lancer, Harlene immediately fell in love with the job and began receiving numerous referrals herself. It was not long before Scott & Harlene had developed a combined waiting list. Playtime Arts Academy (formerly Playtime Piano Instruction) was established in 1997 when Harlene suggested that they expand their business by hiring additional instructors to help them reach more students.

They worked quickly to make this a reality and within 3 years, in the then booming economy, Scott & Harlene and a team of nearly 50 instructors were providing piano & keyboard lessons to more than 360 students in their homes on a weekly basis and a waiting list soon developed once again... In 2015, in conjunction with their rebranding, Playtime Arts Academy began offering in-home guitar & voice lessons as well. Harlene continued to travel to visit her piano students weekly and to work with Scott in managing the Academy, especially in the recruitment and training of new instructors up until the time of her sudden unexpected passing in August of 2017.

Scott has since brought in an office employee, Tony Gensler who is assisting him in continuing to propel the business forward so that the Academy can continue to fulfill its mission of bringing the joy of music into the homes of families throughout the Greater Baltimore Metropolitan area.
