Yesterday, students who participated in the Student Summer Scholars Research Program (S3RP) presented their results to their peers, faculty, and staff.

Students participating in S3RP work closely with a faculty member for 8 weeks solidifying skills learned in the classroom, learning new ones, and truly experiencing what it is like doing academic research. Many students go on to present their work at regional and/or national conferences. Some students continue their research during the semester.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet with a staff member from Senator Chris Van Hollen’s office (D-MD) to advocate for strong support of H.R. 5444—and I’m energized by the conversation we had. I was able to showcase the outstanding program we have here at Medical Laboratory Science at Stevenson University.
In partnership with the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) and the Medical Laboratory Science Program - Salisbury University, I was proud to help highlight the critical role this legislation plays in strengthening the laboratory workforce and protecting patient care.
Medical laboratory professionals are essential to our healthcare system, yet they are often underrecognized and facing significant workforce challenges. H.R. 5444 (linked below) represents an important step toward addressing these issues and ensuring high-quality diagnostics for all patients.
We made it clear: investing in medical laboratory education and strengthening the laboratory workforce is investing in better health outcomes. I appreciate the staff’s engagement and willingness to listen, and I’m hopeful to see continued leadership from Senator Van Hollen on this issue.
Advocacy matters—and together, our voices can drive meaningful change.

Last EMP Tea of the Spring Semester! We celebrated our graduating seniors, played Bohnanza, and did our best to finish off all the Oreos. 🎓🫘🍪

On Saturday, Prof. Amy Tucker (Math) and Aaliyah Blackmon (‘27 Applied Math) attended the DC-VA-MD Section Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) at Frederick Community College. The Spring meeting is designed to highlight undergraduate work with presentations and posters of student research.

Prof. Tucker also helped run two fun undergraduate events which are coordinated by Dr. Ben Wilson (Math). The Radical Dash is a timed, team problem-solving competition with a twist! Team Jeopardy features math trivia as well as calculations.

The 10th Annual Spring Spectacular is less than a week away! Today’s student group highlight is the SU Student Chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM).

The purpose of AWM is create a community in which women and girls can thrive in their mathematical endeavors and to promote equitable opportunity and gender-inclusivity across the mathematical sciences. Come meet our members and learn more at their table!
