Helpful Hints for DCPS Students and Families -
How to Improve Your Google/Virtual Experience
Wow! What a rush in just five school days! Our students have learned new content, faculty and staff have learned new ways to teach, and we - in the DCPS technology departments - have learned the technological limitations of virtual education. The longevity limits of a computer before all the keys pop off, the processing limits of a core router, the distance limits of a house from a cell tower, and the bandwidth limits of a home wifi setup with multiple students in the home are all things we’ve learned in the last five school days.
However, we’ve also learned several actions we can all take to improve the overall computer experience and to avoid overwhelming our devices (and Google). Consider the following suggestions.
Restart your computer daily
Sit near the wifi router in the home
Turn off all other Internet streams (Spotify, Netflix, etc) in the home
Reduce the number of active Chrome extensions
Reduce the number of active Chrome tabs
Reduce the number of Windows
Reduce the number of additional Apps
Mute your mic when you enter a Meet
Mute your camera when you enter a Meet (biggest adjustment)
Leave the camera muted as much as possible (Students)
Reduce the length of a recording only the delivery of content
Reduce the minutes students are live in a Meet only to the essential learning time
School district technology leaders across the country are giving similar advice to their teachers and students. If we all take at least some of these actions, quality should improve.

PARENT/STUDENT RESOURCES FOR VIRTUAL LEARNING
After reading the responses from the Spring NTI parent and student surveys and hearing several requests from principals and teachers, we have started working on a website full of resources to assist families with virtual learning. Parents and students will be able to view tutorials on all Google apps, Chrome, and a few other technology platforms. We will be adding to this webpage frequently.

DCPS community -
Please support our efforts to ensure that ALL children in Daviess County have access to broadband services that will enable them to fully participate in digital learning experiences. The current status of non-traditional instruction places an exceptional burden on families that do not have access to high-speed internet in their homes.
On behalf of Daviess County and 13 other counties in western Kentucky, Kenergy is petitioning the Kentucky Public Service Commission to clear legislative and regulatory hurdles that would allow them to provide this service to families in rural areas of our community that are currently without service.
We encourage you to add your voice to this campaign! Please contact the Kentucky Public Service Commission at the email address listed below. Put "Case No. 2020-00215" in the subject line of your email. Write your own message, or a sample message is included below for your convenience:

To the Kentucky Public Service Commission:
I support the effort of Kenergy Corp. to ensure the availability of high-speed internet in all areas of Kentucky, specifically our rural communities. As a member of the Daviess County Public Schools district community, it is essential that we are able to connect all students to online learning and digital information, especially now as schools are conducting classes virtually. Every child has the right to a meaningful learning experience, and extending broadband services into the homes of every student is an important step in making that possible.

YOU can help kids connect with learning! Do you have an old laptop that is no longer being used? Or perhaps your company or the business you work for has some laptops that are no longer needed. Please consider donating laptops to help a student stay connected with learning as the school year begins with Virtual Academy and Digital Learning options! The Daviess County Public Schools has a way to convert donated laptops into usable Chromebooks for our students. Laptops may be dropped off at the DCPS Central Office, 1622 Southeastern Parkway, or the DCPS Computer Operations office at 1621 Southtown Blvd., between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. Or email [email protected] with your contact information and we will make arrangements to pick up your laptop(s) and find them a new home with a student in need. Thank you for your support as we work together to ensure the success of ALL children in our community!
