The story of Wee People did not begin with us.

As the story was shared five years ago, its roots reach back decades—to Mrs. Edna Cornell and her husband, who had spent approximately 35 years caring for children. As they grew older, Mrs. Cornell wanted to make sure the daycare she loved would continue after their retirement.

In 1985, that opportunity was entrusted to Mrs. Janet Faye Turner and her husband, Thomas A. Turner Jr. Janet had a dream and a passion for nurturing, loving and caring for children, and Wee People became the place where she lived out that calling.

For the next 36 years, Wee People became so much more than a daycare.

Thousands of children came through its doors. Generations of families trusted Wee People with their babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Dedicated teachers and caregivers gave years—and in some cases decades—of their lives to the children here. Children were loved, nurtured, taught and prepared for school by people who truly believed in what they were doing.

Then, five years ago, another chapter began.

When the time came for the Turner family to pass Wee People on, they wanted what Mrs. Cornell had wanted so many years before: for the daycare to continue in the hands of people who would love the children and protect what had been built.

Our family was given that opportunity.

We knew when we took over Wee People that we weren’t simply purchasing a childcare center. We were being entrusted with a legacy.

And now, five years later, what a joyous ride it has been.

We have had the privilege of watching babies we once held in our arms grow into toddlers, preschoolers and, eventually, kindergarteners. We have watched first steps become confident footsteps walking out our doors toward elementary school.

Some of our proudest moments happen after those children leave us.

We receive calls, texts and emails from parents telling us how well their children are doing and how impressed they are with how prepared they were for kindergarten. Those messages mean more than people probably realize. They reassure us that the work happening inside Wee People every day is making a difference.

But preparing a child for kindergarten isn’t about expecting every child to learn the same way.

They don’t.

Every child who walks through our doors is different. They have different personalities, strengths, challenges, backgrounds and ways of learning. Part of our responsibility is recognizing those differences and doing our best to meet each child where they are.

We are proud that Wee People is inclusive. We care for children from different backgrounds and circumstances, including children with different abilities, developmental needs and diagnoses. We work with each child to the best of our abilities to make sure they receive the care, encouragement and opportunities we can provide.

That is what childcare has always been about at Wee People.

Buildings can change. Owners can change. Teachers and children eventually move on. But the heart of a childcare center is found in the people who walk through its doors and the relationships built inside its walls.

Mrs. Cornell understood that when she wanted her daycare to continue.

Janet Turner understood it when she devoted 36 years of her life to Wee People.

And five years ago, when her family entrusted Wee People to ours, we understood the responsibility we were accepting.

Today, after more than four decades under the Wee People name—and an even longer history of caring for children before that—we are still here.

Still teaching.

Still nurturing.

Still including.

Still preparing children for kindergarten.

Still watching babies grow up.

And still doing our very best every day for the families who trust us with the most precious people in their lives.

To the families who were here long before us, the families who have joined us during these past five years, our teachers and staff, and everyone who has been part of the Wee People story: thank you.

Five years ago, someone else ended their chapter by passing the baton to us.

We are proud to say that we are still carrying it.

The Wee People story continues.
