🎓🩺 GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT SUNDAY 🩺🎓
As graduation gets closer, we’re excited to celebrate the students who have worked so hard to reach this point. Each Sunday, we’ll be highlighting a member of our graduating nursing class and sharing a little about their journey. 🤍
This week, meet Chase Canary!
🩺 Why Nursing?
After losing his grandfather to heart disease and his great-grandmother to breast cancer, Chase was inspired by the nurses who cared and fought diligently for them. Their impact inspired him to want to provide that same care for others and their loved ones.
💭 Favorite Nursing School Memories:
Chase remembers the nerves and excitement of that very first clinical day, getting together with classmates after tough semesters, and of course the relief of finally getting those exam scores back!
🏥 What’s Next?
After graduation, Chase hopes to pursue Critical Care and looks forward to continuing to expand his knowledge as a Registered Nurse every day. And, in his own words, he’s also looking forward to “No more ATI!” 😄
💬 His advice to future nursing students:
“Keep fighting. Stay ahead. Believe in yourself. Times will get hard, but if you made it here, you’re meant to be here. Live out your dreams and never forget why you started in the first place.”
Congratulations, Chase! We’re excited to celebrate you and all of our graduating students as they finish this chapter and prepare for the next. 🎓🤍

This weekend, our nursing students had the opportunity to support the Healthy Athlete Village at the Special Olympics softball tournament! ⚾️💙

Students promoted important health topics including healthy eating, physical activity, handwashing, and sun protection—all with the goal of helping athletes stay healthy and perform at their very best! 🥗🏃‍♀️🧼☀️🏅

This is what public health nursing is all about: prevention, health promotion, education, and supporting the health and well-being of populations. Our students got to put those principles into action while connecting with athletes and families in a fun and welcoming environment.

Because nursing isn’t just about caring for people when they are sick—it’s also about helping people stay healthy, prevent illness, and have the opportunity to thrive. 💙🩺

Calling all students applying for the upper division portion UL's pre-licensure to BSN program! UL School of Nursing, Owensboro Extension invites you to attend our upper division application workskhop for those students seeking guidance on the application process.

Please join us in-person September 17, 2-4 p.m. at our location 1000 Breckenridge St, Suite 400, Owensboro, KY 42303.

During the workshops, I'll review the applicaiton process with students, including what to write in the 500-word application essay, where to submit your Castlebranch background check, when to submit official transcripts, as well as discuss next steps submitting your application. Please feel free to bring your laptop and something to write with as you prepare to submit your application.

🎉 Congratulations to our University of Louisville student Becca Carman on being named a finalist in the RiverValley Behavioral Health Youth Mental Health Art Contest!

This year’s theme, “Be Kind to Your Mind,” challenged youth across our region to share messages of hope and mental health awareness through artistic expression.

For her finalist submission, she chose to highlight Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), creating a powerful three-dimensional piece that represents the invisible internal struggles experienced by individuals living with PTSD, particularly those impacted by military trauma. Rather than using a traditional drawing or painting, she intentionally designed a 3D model to add depth and realism, encouraging viewers to reflect on the complexity of mental health and the experiences that often go unseen.

We’re proud to celebrate her creativity, compassion, and commitment to raising awareness about mental health. 💚

🩺✨ Future Nurses Inspiring Future Learners! ✨🩺

Our first-semester ABSN students recently had the opportunity to visit Camp Curiosity at Tamarack Elementary in partnership with Daviess County Public Schools (DCPS)!

Camp Curiosity is a summer enrichment program designed to support young English Language Learners through engaging, hands-on experiences that promote creativity, exploration, language development, and a love of learning. The program provides students with meaningful opportunities to discover new concepts in a fun and supportive environment.

As part of their NURS 314 Population Health course, our nursing students brought health education to life for Pre-K and Kindergarten learners through an interactive lesson focused on hand hygiene and the five senses. While using creative teaching strategies including glitter glue to demonstrate the spread of germs, squishies and sensory objects to explore touch, mystery scents to investigate smell, and music and movement to reinforce learning - students transformed important health concepts into memorable learning experiences.

These activities not only helped children develop healthy habits and gain a better understanding of how their bodies interact with the world around them, but also allowed our nursing students to strengthen their skills in health promotion, patient education, communication, and culturally responsive care.

We are proud of our ABSN students for sharing their knowledge, creativity, and compassion while making learning both meaningful and fun. Experiences like these demonstrate the power of community partnerships and the important role nurses play in promoting health across the lifespan.

We greatly appreciate our continued partnership with Camp Curiosity, Tamarack Elementary, and DCPS. Opportunities like these provide valuable learning experiences for both our nursing students and the children they serve.
