My Uncle Captain Robert V.R. Bassett Jr., USN, was released from a Japanese Prisoner of War Camp shortly after and he was united with his Bassett Family after being held as a POW for 3 1/2 years. ♥

On August 14, 1945, Syracuse erupted in celebration as news spread that Japan had surrendered, bringing an informal end to World War II.

Tens of thousands of people poured into the downtown streets, with the largest crowds gathering along Salina Street between Jefferson and Madison. Cars and pedestrians filled the streets as people honked horns, blew whistles, banged pots and pans, waved flags, danced, played music, embraced strangers, and celebrated the long-awaited return to peace.

At St. Paul’s and St. Mary’s cathedrals, crowds gathered to give thanks and pray for loved ones, including servicemen who were still serving in the Pacific. Across downtown, impromptu celebrations continued late into the night.

Mayor Edward Kennedy declared August 15 a Civic Holiday “to observe a return to peace,” closing non-essential businesses as Syracuse continued its celebration.

💥Each scholarship recipient from the Charles H. Bassett Friends of CHB Youth Foundation based in Owego, New York is asked to accept the 💥Bassett Challenge and perform a💥 "Senior Give Back" of a couple hours of volunteer service to their community to say thanks for providing years of support and an excellent public education.

Ellicotteville High School Class of 2026 Graduating Senior 🌠 Ande Northrup was awarded the Clark-Gallagher Family Scholarship in May and recently completed her "Give Back" of volunteer service to her community:
💥" I hope you are doing well! My name is 🌠Ande Northrup, I am a recent graduate of Ellicottville Central School and I am a recipient of the Clarke-Gallagher Award. I wanted to send in my community service documentation. I truly apologize for not sending this sooner, I forgot that I needed to email this in to complete the process.
🥰Attached is a picture of me participating as a counselor at a volleyball camp put on by my high school in the middle of June. The camp spanned over three days and I completed six hours of service helping the younger students. In addition, I also performed Taps on the trumpet for my community’s Memorial Day Ceremony on May 25.

🥰Thank you so much for selecting me for this scholarship. It means so much to me to have your support as I continue on to college. I will be attending Allegheny College and majoring in Mathematics on a Pre-Law track. Thank you so much for your understanding on this, I will be greatly appreciative if you will still accept my information. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Candor High School Class of 2026 Graduating Senior 🌠Lindsey Morse was awarded the Georgia and Roger Westgate Family Creative Arts Scholarship in May and recently completed her "Give Back" of volunteer service to her community:
💥" Lindsey volunteered at the Allen Memorial Baptist Church Vacation Bible School in July. This VBS is done in combination with a number of churches in the Candor area. She helped with registration and check-in each day. She kept track of the numbers each day so that the leaders knew how many kids attended to ensure they each had games, snacks and other activities covered. In addition, she was able to be cover an absence and was leader for a group of children for one day. Lindsey has been volunteering at this VBS for many years and hopes to continue in the future. "

♥ Class of 2026 Binghamton High School senior 🌠 Samirah Matthews received the Dr. William Hewitt Bassett Scholarship from the Charles H. Bassett Youth Foundation in May and has Given Back to her community..in her own words: 🌠 "Thank you for this scholarship. I am very grateful for the opportunity to volunteer with the Boys & Girls Club for an entire day on August 8th 2026, as part of the Dr. William Hewitt Bassett Scholarship. During the volunteer experience, I had the opportunity to attend a Yankees game with the children and spend the entire day helping and looking after them. I helped make sure the kids were safe, included, and having a good time throughout the day.
🌠Spending the day with the children was a meaningful experience for me because I was able to give my time to support and encourage them while also creating positive memories with them. It taught me the importance of patience, responsibility, leadership, and giving back to my community.

I 🥰would like to sincerely thank everyone who made this opportunity possible and for allowing me to be part of such a meaningful experience. I am especially thankful for the opportunity to volunteer through the Boys & Girls Club and for being considered for the Dr. William Hewitt Bassett Scholarship. This experience reminded me how rewarding it can be to give your time to others, and I am grateful that I was able to make a positive impact while learning and growing myself.
