School nurses are so much more than first aid providers. They deliver essential health services to every student while providing specialized care for those with chronic and complex medical needs. Every day, they respond to emergencies, coordinate care, manage medications and health plans, promote student wellness, and train school staff to keep students safe.

They are often responsible for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of students across multiple buildings, balancing countless responsibilities with limited resources. As student health needs continue to grow, it's more important than ever to ensure school nursing is supported in a way that reflects the vital role these professionals play in supporting student health, learning, and success.

Interested in how school nurses and other school professionals are funded in Washington State? Check out the information from OSPI below on the prototypical school funding model. It provides a helpful overview of how the state allocates funding for school nursing positions and other essential student support services.

Some K–12 public school nurses in Washington start their day at one school, then travel to another school to finish their day, while others split their week between schools in their district.

To understand why this happens, it’s important to know how schools are funded in Washington. The prototypical funding model estimates the staff, materials, and resources needed to operate an average school.

It’s not uncommon for districts to stretch resources. In this example, schools in a district with lower enrollment may not be able to hire a full-time nurse. Instead, the district shares the nurses’ time between those schools.
