Overland Park Police: Important Update on E-Motorcycles AKA E-Motos
We hear your concerns about e-motorcycles/E-Motos in our Overland Park neighborhoods. This summer, our officers are cracking down on illegal riding to keep everyone safe.
What Happens if a Minor is pulled over?
The Citation: The rider could get a citation or written warning, and their name will be kept on-file in case this happens again Citations for No Insurance and No License involve a court appearance and hefty fines if found guilty.
The Ride Home: Kids will not be allowed to ride the e-Moto home.
Parent Pickup: Parents must come pick up both their child and the e-moto.
Parent Responsibility: It is illegal for parents to allow their child to operate a motor vehicle on a roadway without a proper license.
Future Violations: Repeat offenses could lead to criminal charges for parents (contributing to the delinquency of a minor).
Know the Difference: E-Bikes vs. E-Motos
E-Bikes (Allowed): These have working (Operational) pedals. They are legal on most roads, sidewalks, and bike paths (just follow the speed limits).
E-Motorcycles / E-Motos (Restricted): These do not have (Operational) pedals and go much faster. They are motorized vehicles. It is illegal to ride them on sidewalks or bike paths, and they are illegal to ride on roadways without proper registration, insurance, headlights, tail lights, turn signals, brake lights, helmets/eye protection if under 18 years old, and a valid driver's license with a motorcycle endorsement.
Parents: Please help us before someone gets seriously hurt or killed. Parents know what your kids are riding, where they are riding, and the applicable laws. We want everyone to have a fun summer, but our priority is preventing a serious accident.
