This week my teenage students have been building their scales on the floor staff, complete with accidentals (flats) and finger numbers. πŸ–

Without looking at a piano 🎹 and without using muscle memory in your fingers, this exercise is definitely a workout for the mind! πŸ‹β€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ€Έβ€β™‚οΈ

Darrell has been working on more classical repertoire this year, and is making great strides. πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈπŸͺœ

In this short video, he plays the original form of Brave Knight βš”οΈ (aka The Hero's March) by German composer Moritz Vogel, who lived from 1846 to 1922.

Darrell's progress just goes to show that it's never too late to start something new! πŸ’™πŸ˜Šβ€οΈ

What a good looking bunch of students, wouldn't you agree??

Despite the snow, we had a HUGE turnout. This is the first year ever that we ran out of programs and filled every single chair. Yay!

Elias and Andie were very excited today, pretending to be cats 😸 while watching the other students arrive for piano ensemble practice.

We're looking forward to tomorrow's recital!

The holidays were great at Music on the Brain; we're gearing up now for meet-and-greets with new potential students.

2 of my students, Debbie and Emily, played together for their Christmas Eve mass before the new year. It was wonderful!

To wrap up 2025, meet Emma -- another new addition to the studio! Listen to her as she works on her "backwards music alphabet". She's rockin' it!

Next up in the roster of new students is Bridget. After only 8 lessons, Bridget is knocking out the 5 main landmark notes without a single hesitation. Watch her put them on the rug quick as a bunny!

Hanna also transferred to Music on the Brain this year. Here we're playing the duet "Lament", which is one of my favorite pieces from the Piano Safari Older Student series.

Hanna came to me with an excellent sense of rhythm already, and her music reading skills are increasing by leaps and bounds. Most importantly, though, she really connected with a new way of looking at piano technique (which she shows off in this video!) All those things combined have given Hanna a much needed boost in confidence, knowing that she's capable of moving ahead so quickly.

P.S. One day I'll have a giant room for my studio and the piano won't be squished into a tiny alcove...please excuse the reaching!

Check out Reis, who transferred into the studio this year. πŸŽ‰

He's been working hard to address a few little technique issues, and does a great job keeping a round hand shape in this video. πŸ‘

Check it out, and give your kudos to Reis! πŸ™Œ
