Cut to public education at the Federal level harm students in our district, make it harder to recruit and retain teachers, and also shift cost burdens to state and local taxpayers. See what this means for SMSD ⬇️

📌The Shawnee Mission School District is facing the loss of almost $1,000,000 due to a decision to withhold funding by the U. S. Department of Education (USDOE). These funds, already appropriated by congress, are used to provide support to all students, along with special support to students who come from migrant families and students who are English language learners. Additionally, they provide funds to recruit, prepare, train and retain effective teachers and principals, to ensure that all students have access to high-quality educators.

These funds support programs that are critical to student success in Shawnee Mission, particularly for some of the district’s most vulnerable students. The district is committed to ensuring that the work continues. Unfortunately, this action by the USDOE shifts the financial burden onto local taxpayers. The district will continue to advocate for the release of this funding, in accordance with federal law.
