🔬✨ Hands-On Learning in Action! ✨🔬
Students in the Laser and Optics Program (LEO 259: Optical Devices) are diving into real-world applications in the lab!
Recently, they’ve been working on:
🔹 Spatial filtering
🔹 Building a free-space spectroscope/monochromator
These activities give students the opportunity to apply theory, problem-solve, and develop the technical skills needed for careers in advanced optics and photonics.
👏 Shoutout to our talented students:
Hayden Shaull, Jaden Fisher, Nathan Gilliland, William Machado, Adrian O’Leary, Faith Warner, Tyler Palmer, Lucas Heady, and Carson Ludwig — great work!

📚 Gregg Young Community Hero Spotlight: Martin Blomme 🍎

For the past 13 years, Indian Hills Community College professor Martin Blomme has been making a difference by helping students grow, learn, and discover their potential. What started as a career change quickly turned into a passion for guiding others and helping them succeed in their own journeys.

Martin says his favorite part of teaching is seeing students experience their “AHA moment” — that instant when everything finally clicks. Anyone who has ever struggled to learn something new knows just how important a teacher like that can be. The kind who stays patient, encourages growth, and genuinely wants to see people win.

One person who nominated Martin shared:
“He thrives daily to go above and beyond his expectations to teach as well as better individuals’ learning environment.”

That dedication is exactly what makes Martin so impactful. He doesn’t just teach material — he creates an environment where students feel supported, encouraged, and capable of succeeding.

When asked what keeps him going on the hard days, Martin shared:
“Knowing that what I do may help someone else get theirs someday.”

That mindset says everything about his heart for students and his passion for helping others succeed.

Martin also shared that he’s been inspired by many people throughout his journey — teachers, students, coworkers, and family — proving that great educators never stop learning themselves.

Outside of work, you’ll likely find him spending time with family and friends or grabbing coffee before heading to one of his favorite local spots, Warehouse Barbecue Co..

His favorite quote?
“Do today what others won’t and achieve tomorrow what others can’t.”

Martin, thank you for the countless ways you invest in your students and our community. Your passion for teaching and commitment to helping others grow does not go unnoticed, and we are proud to recognize you as a Gregg Young Community Hero!
