Small Steps Big Dreams Preschool

Small Steps Big Dreams Preschool Montessori materials and curriculum were developed to appeal to the whole child. Plus, as a Christian Montessori preschool we are very unique to this area.

A Christian Montessori preschool and kindergarten where children have the unique opportunity to experience hands-on learning of Montessori in a Christian atmosphere. In a Montessori classroom children: learn best when engaged in hands-on activities; move freely in their environment and investigate whatever interests them; begin at their own level and progress at their own pace; develop a love of

learning. We provide a loving Christian environment where we believe that each child is a special gift from God.

In our sensorial area we work on grading longest to shortest, thickest to thinnest, etc. We also practice colors, shapes, and learn the proper names of geometric solids, such as; a cube, sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism, etc. We also have lessons to help define our senses of sound, touch and sight.

Let's talk about practical life in the Montessori classroom. This area is probably the most important area in the classroom. Practical life teaches independence, focus, fine motor skills, pouring, spooning, tonging, folding clothes, cutting food, stringing, plant care, self care, sewing, setting a table, using buttons, zippers, snaps and hooks, using screwdrivers, wrenches and hammers. Things that you do in everyday life. It teaches that there is a proper order that needs to be followed to achieve the finished result.

On the practical life shelf, pouring work is on the top shelf, spooning on middle shelf, and tonging on the bottom shelf. Breaking it down per shelf the largest object to be poured is towards the left and then the size of the objects being poured decreases going across the shelf towards the right. This is the pattern on each shelf. The least difficult work, pouring, is on the top shelf and the most difficult work, tonging, is on the bottom. On each tray, the container holding the objects to pour, spoon or tong is on the left side because we read from left to right.

In language, we break down the alphabet into 5 groups. The first group being the easiest letter sounds to learn. A child does not advance to the next group until they have mastered the group that they are working on. We have lessons with beginning, ending and middle letter sounds. We also practice rhyming, word building, spelling and handwriting.
