On Thursday, April 16, 2026 Senior Academic Planning Coordinator Melissa Semione and Instructional Designer Carrie Mocyk, both from the Division of Extended Learning, presented at the Annual UPCEA Conference in New Orleans, LA.

This presentation highlighted the research and best practice of SUNY Oswego's newly developed Online Degree and Syracuse Programs Orientation, which was designed last year specifically to better prepare new students in these programs to be successful on their academic journey.

The UPCEA conference was full of timely, relevant sessions that will directly support our online programs and enhance how we serve today’s students and those we’ll reach in the future.

We are proud to highlight Division of Extended Learning team member Ken Cisson, who serves as veteran and military coordinator at Veteran and Military Services, and this new SUNY initiative that supports our veteran and military students and families.

SUNY Oswego is helping remove financial barriers for military-connected students through SUNY - The State University of New York’s tuition gap coverage pilot program, eliminating remaining tuition costs not covered by military education benefits.

The initiative supports veterans, active-duty service members and their families while expanding pathways for academic and career success. 🇺🇸

"... A meeting with Karen Archibee, an academic advisor for the Division of Extended Learning, brought the value of an IPS degree into focus.

"'She recognized how well it aligned with my professional experience and the direction I wanted to grow career-wise,' [Veronica] Farrell recalled. 'It felt like a program designed to meet me exactly where I was. As a full‑time working adult, the IPS degree program provided the flexibility I needed to make earning my degree possible without disrupting my life. Instead of reshaping my world to fit school, the program fit seamlessly into my world.'

"Credits for prior learning and experience –- supplemented by a College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exam –- provided an excellent entry point toward degree progress.

"'This degree plan is built with adult learners in mind, offering resources like credits for prior learning,' Farrell explained. 'I was able to convert my professional certifications into academic credits, complete a CLEP exam to test out of a course, and build portfolio evaluations -- all of which helped me move through the program faster while honoring the real‑world experience I already had. It reinforced the feeling that the IPS degree program was built with students like me in mind.'"

Advancing Leadership Excellence

We had a great time yesterday hosting an engaging 3-hour session on leadership and professionalism!

It was a fantastic morning of growth and collaboration with one of our valued community partners. We’re proud to support these dedicated professionals as they work toward their Leadership Development Academy microcredential, building the key capabilities that drive success for their team and our region.

It’s always a win when we can help foster a culture of excellence beyond campus and throughout the community.

Stay tuned for more ways to grow with us!

Today we are bringing awareness to Moyamoya disease. 💙 Extended Learning staff is wearing blue in honor of spreading the word as early detection is key to better outcomes!

Moyamoya is a rare, progressive condition that narrows the blood vessels in the brain, often leading to strokes and other neurological challenges.
