Why does the union not want community involvement in book reviews? Consider speaking up and attending tonight’s board meeting! 6pm at the ESC!

An organized disinformation campaign that includes a union-led effort of opposition to the passage of revised policy 652. They are calling it the “Book Banning Policy.” Strangely they are saying “expansion of book banning” and are claiming the inclusion of community members and board review of books as “expanded power” rather than existing policy. The current language allows for the inclusion of community members (remember that referendum that passed and increased your taxes?). State law requires that school boards have advisory groups that include community members, so why should book reviews be any different?

The union is going to have speakers claiming they don’t want residents to have the opportunity to participate in the book review process (see pic). Speakers are going to be needed to emphasize the policy that existing practice of incorporating community representation consistent with state law that encourages community engagement and participation in curriculum and materials.

We'll include a screenshot in the comments of one of the books brought up in book review this year. We don't agree with broad book bans, but that books need to be age appropriate - not have graphic depictions of s*xual acts.

Consider speaking up and attending tonight’s board meeting! 6pm at the ESC!

It is hard to believe it, but the end of the school year is just 12 days away! We're so thankful for:
- The engagement from community members this year!
- Our amazing teachers and school staff as they educate our kids!
- Parents and staff willing to stand up for kids!
- Courageous students willing to peacefully disagree with the LGBTQIA+ History Lesson.
- Increased awareness around the materials that are in our school libraries.

We encourage you to stay engaged as the issues that cause concern haven't gone away and parents/community need to be persistent! Stay tuned for a recap of this year and how Transparency for Osseo impacted the school year.

Update: legal efforts by some teachers in 279 resulted in the district getting served papers to provide formal opt-out options for teachers for the April 3rd LGBTQ lesson. We're so proud of these teachers for standing up for their rights!

As promised, parents of high schoolers received the LGBTQIA+ lesson notification email on Friday.

A few good things. We are pleased that it was sent as a standalone email with good visibility.

We were quite disappointed in the misleading information being given and the limited time given to review the curriculum.

1- Telling families that EVERYONE will benefit from this learning. That is the district’s belief, but they cannot make such a personal claim for everyone. “Increased focus on the individuality of readers” implies that these lessons are about everyone. They are not, otherwise they wouldn’t be part of this special LGBT curriculum. We as a community in fact believe the reason we don’t need these lessons is that instead of focusing on one identity, we should be focusing on respect for all, without singling out any community.

2- After listing the civil rights laws, the language used is intended to lead families to believe that schools are required to have teaching around LGBT topics. This is untrue. The law states that LGBT students cannot be discriminated against which we support, but it does not require lessons or curriculum surrounding these topics which we do not support. It is frustrating that the school district continues to mislead the community on what is REQUIRED by law and what is ALLOWED by law.

3- The language used around pronouns is again manipulative. It states the importance of using CORRECT pronouns. Correct pronouns are based on s*x, not based upon gender identity beliefs. Using the term correct implies that it is not acceptable behavior to not comply when someone tells you what to call them. The law states you cannot require the use of PREFERRED pronouns.

We ask for more from our district leaders. We ask that you use accurate language without the intention to deceive in order to get everyone to comply with your intentions.

Please listen to last night's meeting. Consider if the board members are who you want shaping the Osseo education system.

1:00:00 Public Comment Start

1:25:15 We're alarmed that a teacher believes that "parental rights" is now a rhetoric term not a built in right when we have children. She also stated that we should trust the schools to have the best interest of our children. OUR children. And just a heads up, there's a reason we may not give carte blanche trust to the school district. It is an earned trust!

2:51:17 Book Review. Also, pay attention to the vote portion at the end of the meeting. These are the people that we're supposed to trust with our children's minds (see teacher's speech in comment above). How much do you trust their judgement after their very superficial and straw man arguments? No matter what you believe about removing books from school libraries, the reasoning board members gave shows the intention behind their decision. Is their main goal academic excellence?

This should have everyone worried...The legislative caucus would like to mandate that all students take part in 2SLGBTQIA+ curriculum. The desire is to override current opt-out policies. Specifically aimed at Muslim parents that recently won a pushto opt their kids out of LGBTQ curriculum. Who's kids are these, the state's or the family's?
