The man who would become an American folk legend, John Chapman (1774-1845), was born in Leominster, Massachusetts on September 26. During the 1800s, he planted acres upon acres of apple trees throughout the western frontier including Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and West Virginia for incoming settlers.

Because his apples were planted from seeds instead of grafting, they were usually bitter and tart, so used for cider (an important beverage when water conditions were unsanitary) instead of eating.

As he walked the country, he gained the nickname "Johnny Appleseed," and stories circulated about his eccentric, worn clothing, old or no shoes, bag of apple seeds, and remarkable wilderness skills.

Although many of his orchards are gone now, his legacy continues with the eventual development of hardy American apple varieties including the Delicious and Golden Delicious. 🍎 🍏

What is Academic Shared Time?

Osseo Area Schools (ISD 279) follows MN Statute to allow for shared time for non-public students. This means that your homeschooled students can participate in select coursed through their local school site. This includes elective courses as well as special education programming.

What does Shared Time look like?

Shared time is limited to 2 class periods of the school day. So your student(s) can take up to 2 classes or electives at their local school site. The school they may participate at must be the school in the attendance area they would attend if they were enrolled in public school. You will need to enroll through the district enrollment center and complete the standard enrollment forms.

Did you know??

Homeschool students are eligible for some state aid. To be eligible for reimbursements, you must complete form ED -01650-37 and return it to us by Oct. 1. Submitting the form indicates that you will be seeking reimbursement; all receipts must be submitted to the school district by May 1. The preliminary authorized reimbursement rate per eligible student for textbooks and standardized tests is $120.97. This rate may be adjusted on or about Oct. 15.
