The science is clear: Dyslexia and intelligence are unrelated.
President Trump’s public mockery of Governor Newsom’s dyslexia highlights a persistent and harmful misconception — that reading difficulties reflect a lack of intelligence.
Decades of research tell a very different story. According to the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity, dyslexia affects approximately 20% of the population. It is entirely independent of cognitive ability. Studies consistently show that dyslexic individuals often demonstrate exceptional strengths in creative thinking, problem-solving, and spatial reasoning.
Governor Newsom put it best: “To every kid with a learning disability: don’t let anyone, not even the President of the United States, bully you.”
