“I wish I could have these big trees in my yard”

I got to work with 3 fifth graders from Read Elementary School, during this time we told the kids about the importance of trees and the environment. Things like why are trees so important to us, what are some things it provides to us, and what we give to them. Having the kids going around on a scavenger, and having them seeing and actually pointing out real life example was very fun. Also teaching the kids how to make a wish on the Wishing tree!!

That tree is 300 years old?

Today the UW Oshkosh students were able to talk with the 5th graders from Read Elementary School about our connections with nature! We were hanging out in this part of the campus for a while, and we told the students about the different kind of trees there were and how old they were. One of the oak trees that was there was estimated to be over 300 years old, and the kids got a kick out of that. All of the students were engaged the entire time and had a fun learning about the depths to nature!

“All the leaves are different colors!”

Today we worked with some firth grades and taught them about trees and the enviorment! One kid in my group said "wow look at all the colors of leaves!" With the changing colors and colder weather coming it was super interesting outside. Bringing the kids outside really showed how much our young guys need to be out and about. The kids enjoyed finding out how tall the trees were the most out of the activities we did even more than creating their own nature journals!

“This is the best day ever!”

Being able to teach kids about nature and the best way to respect the planet so future generations can enjoy what we now enjoy really makes the time fly by. We got to walk around the UWO campus and see all the different types of trees, leaves, berries, and vines that are present in just one area. Making it a fun way to teach kids about nature is the way they are going to remember....

All About the Oak Tree

Today we worked with Read School in pairs, and got to work with 3-4 kids per group. We went around doing a scavenger hunt in the yard where the kids were able to find and identify things such as leaves, trees, vines, etc. After this, we sat down as they wrote in their nature journals, which we decided to have our group focus on the oak tree we were sitting by....

“I hope the birds can find this”

Right when we got to the park, one of the students found a few sticks that had been woven together in a circle and really liked it. He tried to add more twigs and sticks to it and kept saying he hoped a bird could find it and use it as part of their nest. It was so great to see a student already so interested in nature and hoping he could help/ do something kind for another living thing. It also sparked good, educational conversations about different birds and how they make their nests/ why they are important to them.

” I want to get a big snake just like that, when I grow up”

Since we had the biggest animal there, many kids were excited to meet Abby the red-tailed boa. The point is that it was great to see kids happy to meet a new specie without being scared, and wanting to learn about it, and how it's not harmful to society, because most times people think that certain species are very bad and dangerous, which can be true but we can coexist with the species and that's what the kids got to learn. 1777093022.838537.jpg (1290×1715)

“This Is My Favorite Animal I’ve Seen Today!”

While presenting different animals to elementary students, we asked them at the end of our presentation what their favorite animal that they had seen that day was. Many of them said it was our snake, Abby the red-tailed boa! Our group had many excited students ready to pet the snake and ask questions about it. Some of them found it funny that it was our first time meeting Abby as well....

“This is the slimiest thing I have ever touched”

This event was when we were able to go to a school and work with 3rd graders! I was able to teach them all about frogs. The frog that my partner and I had was a Dumpy Tree frog named Yoda Nugget. Is she shy?

Today at Lourdes we got to enjoy the nice weather and learn about a variety of different animals! They got to meet Rose the Three-Toed box turtle. They learned all about the environment impacts this species face and the different ways it helps our ecosystem. This program allowed the kids to do such while also getting to meet the animals face to face. They even got to touch them!
