Remembering the Greatest NFL Pass Defense of the 1970s!
When we're talking great defenses of the 1970s in the NFL, we're probably mentioning the likes of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dallas Cowboys, the Oakland Raiders, the Los Angeles Rams, the Miami Dolphins, etc.
But when we're discussing the league's greatest PASS defenses of the decade, the 1972 Green Bay Packers stand head and shoulders above the rest. The 1972 Packers? Yes. That team permitted a meager seven touchdown passes all season long. Just seven!
Today's NFL pass defenses typically give up seven touchdown passes every two to three games. The 1972 Packers secondary gelled almost immediately at the start of that season, and at least two of the TD passes that they surrendered occurred late in a couple of games that were already won and had several second stringers on the field. Prized rookie Willie Buchanon (in the photo) was an exemplary shut-down cornerback for that 1972 Green Bay defense. He was voted as the Associated Press' Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1972.
If you would like to watch 54 minutes' worth of Green Bay highlights from their 1972 season from NFL Films, click on the link below to check it out. What are your memories of the Packers' 1972 pass defense?
