Remember to be mindful of what you say. Even if you are trying to make a joke remember that racism, homophobia, sexism, and any form of targeted comments toward marginalized communities.
Saying slurs do have an impact on individuals. In a psychological study researcher found that when the participants were exposed to homophobic slurs it decreased their connection to learning and their connection to school and increased symptoms of anxiety and depression (Bergen, n.d.).
Take that into mind when you are waiting for your lecture to start and you are talking with your friends and making “jokes”. Someone is a different row can hear you and you have taken away their ability to focus on the class and increased symptoms of anxiety and depression for them.
