- I’m the leader of Mr. Neo’s fan club!
- I want to be an artist when I grow up!
- I can’t wait to paint the mural!
- I did that part!
- That’s me!

All things said by students at Read Elementary School during the Mural Painting project. This is what happens when we invest in our kids!

We’re off today for the Read Mural Painting but want to share some special memories from yesterday.

Thank you to Oshkosh Area School District Superintendent Bryan Davis and UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Singh for stopping by! We also had lots of amazing teachers, staff, board members, and community members help out! Thank you for making this possible, especially our funders from Project S.O.A.R. and Community Arts Grant from the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation.

Day 2 (kids are excited to get started)…

Before every class starts painting our Somos Semillas mural, we talk about three things:

1. This is YOUR school.
🚀Be proud of it. Take care of it. You are helping create something that will be here for years.

2. You belong here. You are growing here.
🚀Somos Semillas means “We Are Seeds.” We all grow through learning, reading, friendship, and connection.

3. Tell your story.
🚀Neo Medina has shared his story with our students, including the obstacles he has faced to get where he is today. This mural is about representation, but it’s also about reminding our kids that their stories matter.

There will be obstacles. There will be hard things. But our kids are resilient. They can grow through those challenges, just like seeds do.

And then we hand them a paintbrush and let them add a little piece of their own story to their school. ❤️
