New settings, new software, new diagnoses, or new treatment techniques…

I know you’re juggling a lot as an OT practitioner. The mental load is REAL.

I also know that every OT and OTA in every setting can address driving to help clients achieve the best outcomes possible.

Not everyone will get to celebrate outside the DMV when a client passes their test, but the work that you do in the hospital, rehab facility, home health, and outpatient clinics can set clients up for this achievement!

Many OTs and OTAs say they’re unsure how to answer client questions about driving or where to refer them. They know they can’t take clients on the road if they’re not a specialist, so avoiding the topic is easiest.

But, I promise, with the right tools and an understanding of the driver rehabilitation process, you CAN answer these questions. It gets easier over time.

I know... the easiest thing to do is avoid the topic of driving.

You wouldn't be the only OT to nervously laugh and deflect when a client mentions they think they’re fine to drive again.

But avoidance doesn’t protect anyone.

It puts your client and your community at risk.

What our clients need is guidance, context, and appropriate referrals to specialists who can help them return to the road safely (or navigate driving retirement).

You can provide this guidance while staying firmly in your lane as an OT or OTA in general practice.

Not every client returns to driving safely, but many do reclaim their independence and it means the world to them.
