Two days. 25 public works leaders and aspiring leaders. Eight leadership-focused sessions. And a room full of people willing to learn, participate, and grow.

I recently had the opportunity to facilitate another two-day leadership training for the Public Works Association of Maine, and this group was exceptional.

We covered topics including:

• Accountability
• Communication
• Hiring & onboarding
• Addressing low performance
• Coaching for performance
• Employee engagement
• And more

But what stood out most wasn’t simply what we covered, it was how engaged this group was.

They asked thoughtful questions. They shared openly. They challenged ideas. And, most importantly, they left with practical things they could take back to their teams and put into action.

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to facilitate a workshop for Community Concepts as part of their kickoff for the new year.

We spent the day talking about different personality and behavioral styles, and how understanding ourselves can help us recognize our strengths and show up with more confidence.

We also talked about the importance of being aware of our blind spots, staying open to feedback, and recognizing that there is always room to grow.

We wrapped up the day with a conversation about leadership — and one of my favorite reminders: you don’t need a title to be a leader.

Leadership can look like creating connection, communicating clearly, finding common purpose, and influencing the people around you in a positive way.

It was such a great conversation and a meaningful way to kick off the new year together.
