From the classroom to a Maine manufacturing plant, UMaine students are getting the chance to do work that matters early.

Through the Building Science Program, chemical engineering senior Brian Waterbury is spending the summer at Timberhp, helping with research, testing and quality control for wood-fiber insulation. He is gaining professional experience while helping a Maine company improve products that can make homes more energy efficient.

That is what Building Science is all about: giving students hands-on opportunities to explore better materials, smarter energy systems and more sustainable ways to build for Maine’s future.

Designing a boat that can navigate, avoid obstacles and make decisions on its own is no small engineering challenge.

UMaine mechanical engineering students designed, manufactured and tested critical systems for an autonomous RoboBoat while working directly with industry expertise. They coordinated across teams, solved problems in real time and adapted when components failed.

That is how students become engineers.

Thank you to Jacob Ward, Ph.D., P.E., a UMaine mechanical engineering alumnus, and the UMaine Advanced Structures and Composites Center Maritime Structures team for supporting these capstone experiences and investing directly in the next generation of engineers.

Medicine is changing. So is the way future doctors learn.

University of Maine electrical and computer engineering Ph.D. candidate Kevin Real MD is combining medicine, engineering and artificial intelligence to improve how surgeons diagnose and treat retinopathy of prematurity, a leading cause of childhood blindness.

Beyond his research, Kevin is deeply invested in Maine's communities — mentoring high school students and developing STEM curricula used across Maine to inspire future innovators.

Global challenges demand global partnerships and new technologies.

The future of the will be built by the institutions willing to lead both.

This summer, we welcomed students from the University of Science and Technology (NTNU) for an international summer school advancing technologies for ocean engineering. Bringing together world-class expertise in offshore engineering, , sensing technologies, and digital infrastructure, the program provided students with hands-on experience tackling the challenges shaping our oceans.

The future of the blue economy won't be built in isolation. It will be built through partnerships that span disciplines, industries, and continents.

Captured inside the AeroSystems Dynamics Laboratory at the University of Maine, this image shows airflow moving past an airfoil inside a wind tunnel that was designed and built from scratch by Assistant Professor Ahmed Aboelezz and his research team.

The glowing green laser sheet reveals complex flow structures that are normally invisible to the human eye and marks an exciting milestone as the lab prepares for advanced aerodynamic testing.

Facilities like this give students and researchers the opportunity to tackle real-world aerospace challenges right here in Maine while contributing to the future of aircraft, drone, and flight technologies.

With temperatures climbing in Maine, some of our Black Bears decided to cool off on a glacier.

Students in UMaine's Construction Engineering Technology program are spending the month in Alaska building a new bunkhouse at Camp 10 on the Juneau Icefield as part of their CET 458: Management of Construction class.

Led by Will Manion, students are responsible for planning, logistics, project management, safety, and construction in one of the most remote environments imaginable. The project provides hands-on experience that challenges them to apply the skills they've developed throughout their degree to a real-world construction project.

The new bunkhouse will support the Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP), a world-renowned field research and education program that has trained generations of scientists and researchers studying glaciers, climate, and alpine environments since 1946.

The University of Maine is seeking artists and artist teams to help shape one of the most ambitious research and education facilities in Maine.

GEM is being built as a hub for sustainable materials, advanced manufacturing, research, education, and industry collaboration. The artwork selected for this space will become part of the building's legacy, helping welcome generations of students, researchers, industry partners, and visitors.

We're looking for creative ideas that explore the connections between art, technology, sustainability, innovation, and Maine's unique sense of place. Artists are even encouraged to think beyond traditional static sculpture and consider works that evolve, adapt, or engage the public over time.
