Today marks International Overdose Awareness Day. In recognition, we highlight an article published in the 2023 Maine Policy Review, titled "Are Maine Voters Ready for Drug Policy Reform? Findings from a Statewide Survey." The abstract notes that Maine is experiencing an unprecedented overdose crisis, prompting debate on effective policy responses to the increasing prevalence of substance use disorder. This article presents survey findings on the policy attitudes of Maine voters toward drug policy reform, including restructured drug laws, enhanced recovery pathways, and improved harm reduction and overdose prevention strategies. The results indicate that policy positions rooted in stigmatization and criminalization of substance use disorder are increasingly misaligned with public perspectives. Maine's distinct ideological landscape, the 2022 rejection of criminally focused policies, and the significant impact of substance use in the state underscore the need for bold policy reforms. 💖

Members of our Rural Drug and Alcohol Research Program played a significant role at Governor Mills' 8th Opioid Summit in Bangor last month. We will be recognizing each team member's contributions to the summit. Research Associate Dominic Piacentini participated as a panelist on 'Aging and Addiction: Bringing Older Adults into the SUD Conversation.' The panel was organized by the Governor's Office of Policy Innovation and the Future's Cabinet on Aging, established by Governor Mills in 2022 to support Maine residents in aging safely and affordably. Piacentini presented data on trends in fatal and nonfatal overdose rates and substance use disorder MaineCare claims among older Mainers. The panel featured additional experts who addressed ageism in healthcare, treatment access, and family dynamics.

The editors of the Maine Policy Review (MPR) are seeking articles, commentaries, and essays for a upcoming special issue dedicated to Maine’s Infrastructure.

From roads and broadband to housing, healthcare, and energy, infrastructure dictates how we invest in and sustain our communities. As Maine faces more urgent and complex choices about its future, we want to hear from multiple stakeholders.

🔍 Big Questions We’re Exploring:
What infrastructure do Maine communities urgently need right now, and who decides?

How do we fund and invest in these critical systems?

How do rural and urban infrastructure challenges differ, overlap, and rely on each other?

How can we build innovative infrastructure that withstands climate change while preserving Maine's unique character?

📝 What We’re Looking For:
We are welcoming perspectives on both hard/built infrastructure (transportation, grid energy, water, broadband) and social infrastructure (schools, healthcare facilities, state parks, emergency services).

Commentaries: 1,000–2,500 words summarizing recent events, processes, or policy formulation.

Research-based Articles: 2,500–6,000 words reporting original research and policy implications.

⏰ Deadlines & How to Apply:
Abstract Deadline: Submit a proposal of 250 words or less by July 31, 2026.
